mom and dad, how you use your kid's eye drops?

when your kid's eyes suddenly turns red, and you don't know what it caused. do you just immediately give your kid some over the counter eye drops? or do you wait for a couple hours/days to see if your kid's eyes turn into normal again? do you feel that it safe to use the otc eye drops to your kids by yourself or you have to consult with your doctor? and if you use it, how do you choose from so many eye drops out there? do you choose that contains only artificial tears or you choose that contain antibiotics or steroid?
