I was a little surprised last night

As I drove home between eight and nine last night, I was a little surprised. I was driving down Main Street, and I saw something running across the road. It did not run like a dog, but was way too big to be a cat, it was a fox! I think more and more wildlife is moving into town. Do you have this kind of experience in your community? It is not like it was the dead of night, there was still traffic, the movie theater two blocks away and a restaurant, and some other businesses were open, and of course the young people were standing talking on the corners. It just surprised me a little to see a fox there.

Well I don't live in a big city but we bear have been spotted in people's yards, a few years ago we had a moose on a college campus. They are not sure how, but they think it crossed the hudson river. I see fox around every so often and deer all of the time - one time we saw one looking in our window.

Yes, we see foxes occasionally. The states largest dam is very near my home. It is surrounded by native trees. Foxes live there. Occsassionaly they wander into nearby streets. Once, a cat I owned, was bitten on the tail by a fox.

In our area it wouldn't be anything big to see a fox running across the road any time of day or night as we have wildlife everywhere , although I was surprised when my sister in law and I made a trip and saw a bear cub on the side of the road , although many others have seen bears in our area , I never had . What surprised me was all the people who had jumped out of their cars to take pictures , do they not realize that where there is a bear cub there is alwasy a mama bear and she would be pretty mad to see all these people around her baby . My sister in law was going to get out of the car and try to get closer for a picture as well when I said that these people were crazy because when mama bear decided to show her face they were going to be in trouble as a bear can outrun a car especially with the turns in the road in our area . Although we see a lot of wildlife all the time and this is part of the norm , I do find we are getting more and more of them every year .

On one of our trips back east, we saw a mamma bear and her cubs dumpster diving in a pretty posh suburb in Massachusetts. Everyone rushed out of the restaurant to see, but we stayed inside. We asked the wait staff about it, and they said "Well they used to come every night, but someone called the police about it." I just had to wonder, what did the police do? The bears recognized the dumpster as a good source of free food.

I saw a fox in my church parking lot about a month ago, and it took me aback. There is a lot of land behind the church, but just a few miles away is traffic and a lot of housing editions. A few months before that we had a coyote sitting in the parking lot. It looked half dog half coyote, and I wanted to pet it. I wouldn't have, even if my dad HADN'T threatened to kill me for trying it. LOL

I am familiar with the area you live in, and that surprises me more than the wildlife I see where I live. I have seen coyotes around a lot over the years. We were taught that they were the most adaptable of the wild canines in the area. The fox are getting more and more prolific and braver about the city as well.

I see lots of foxes, deer, badgers and rabbits darting across the road where I live, but perhaps that's because I live in a very rural area, which is rich in wildlife. I love to see the animals, which are more often around at dusk and after. I saw a fox walking up the pathway outside my front garden one night when I had my head out the window for a breather. Bold as brass he was... choosing whose dustbin he'd raid. lolol. Brightest Blessings.

I live in a city of 62,000. But I also live very close to Springbrook Nature Center. So I see all types of critters around my house. Foxes, porcupines, possum, racoon, deer, eagles, cranes, etc etc. They roam freely in the neighborhood at times as if they own it. I love it also. I even had a wild turkey in my driveway this spring. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

A fox probably would not attack you, unless you threatened its young, or it had rabies. You are wise just to go calmly away.

You're right wildlife is starting to move into town. Not so long ago we were coming home from town and we got I'd say about 4 blocks from our house and a deer walked across the front of my car. My daughter called the other day and said she had a slug of porcupine quills all through her flower bed in the front of her house and along the tires of her van which sits in her car port next to the house. So there you go it's not just where you live it's happening here in Canada as well. Take Care my friend!!!

Wow, a fox would have surprised me too. We have some wildlife issues in our area as well. Not long ago the area was all farm land and we have built right on top of the wildlife's homes. Most were chased away but some are rather resilient. Rabbits especially.... they are going anywhere.

I wish! I love foxes and I would love to meet one of them. They are not common in my country though. I have seen a wolf once. It is a wolf that only exists in my area. It is a huge wolf with long legs. Really beautiful. Its name in Portuguese is Lobo Guara.

Luckily you weren't out taking a nice stroll or anything in the foxs' path. That would've been terrible.

In our town they also go after stray cats, or cats that are outside. I bet it was fun to watch that one catch a mouse, though.

A fox will NEVER go for a human. They mostly eat mice, squirrels, chickens, ducks, partridge(small pheasent),rabbits, sometimes skunks and small birds.Their main prey is mice and squirrels. They are a shy creature and if you go too close they will run away very fast.Their predators are coyotes and wolves.I have alot of foxes where i live and some that pass in my yard on a trail of mine.I sat on my step and watched one the other day catch a mouse in my field. It never moved, then it sprung up in the air from its hind legs, nose down and caught one.It was amazing to see.

I see all sorts of things running across the road here from foxes, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, turtles, skunks and possums. I live in a wooded area but even out on the major and back roads there is always wildlife going across the roads. Of course, I am always careful not to hit any of them because I love animals.

I am not surprised when the wildlife is near my house, as I plant to attract and shelter it. I am surprised when it is a four lane paved street, with bright lights and open businesses.

Where I stay there is quite often foxes roming around, they don't appear to cause much harm but probably will catch cats and other small animals. They appear more in winter evenings than summer. There are also a few squirrels around as well, although they probably provide food for the foxes as well.

I’ve seen several fox up by my house- plus black bear- Even saw a black bear on the edge of town – by our hospital- I think more and more wildlife is in the area also- Gets kind of scary at night- Don’t want to go outside without a flashlight.

It's funny that people keep saying that wildlife is 'coming closer to' or 'coming into' town. Actually, isn't it more correct to say that towns and cities are extending outward into animal territory? It probably was a fox. Might it have been a coyote, perhaps, GardenGerty? I know that Coyotes are remarkably adaptable creatures who seem to be able to survive anywhere. I really believe that foxes are close on the list of 'adaptable' animals, because I have seen foxes, myself, right in heavily populated urban areas - right in my city. I hope that whatever kind of animal it was that you saw, it will find a safe place to stay. If it was a 'wild' animal and not just some unusually large cat or domestic pet, I hope that it wandered carelessly instead of coming closer to the human environment in search of food or something. Lord knows, if someone gives it McDonald's food or it gets into a dumpster bin of Kentucky Fried Chicken leftovers, the poor li'l thing is gonna be HISTORY, eh? ;)

Definitely a fox. I have had them in my yard as well, which is almost to the edge of town, I have also had coyotes in my yard, but that is a different story. This is a small town, of a pretty stable size. It is expanding, but not where I noted the fox.Because I plant habitat in my yard, nothing surprises me at home. It is when they see a fox, or a coyote, or a deer downtown that I am surprised. I also have always been told that it was more common to see coyotes in populated areas as they adapt better to man. The area I saw this fox was not an area where we have fast food restaurants, that is out by the interstate. This was one of the larger of the two breeds of fox I have seen in town.

I live in a small town and there is a fox thats always in my dooryard. There is a big potatoe field behind my house.Im surrounded by trees. It passes in the morning using my trail through the trees and goes across the road in the woods. It doesnt bother me,so i dont bother it.At the local park there is one there that goes looking in the garbage cans for something to eat.Its not normal at all. There use to be alot of rabbits around my house and in the woods, but for awhile now i havent seen hardly any. There natural food source is thinning out and they have to go find it somewhere else.I saw one chewing on a McDonald pop glass 1 week ago and took off with it.This was weird!I had 2 wild ducks that use to come eat at my bird feeder and i know that the big male fox got it,because i heard something 1 month ago and i only see the female one now.Its a shame but it has to live:the circle of life.Moose coming in my dooryard is another story.

For about two years our rabbit population has been down, I know that happens sometimes when they overbreed. We used to have lots, and then for two years almost none. I am seeing them come back a little this summer. Yes, that is a circle of life, and we do tend to mess with it with all of our housing. My house has been in this place for over a hundred years.

I really don't have that kind of experience in our community. Are foxes dangerous creatures? We don't have that kind of animal here in the philippines. In the street you can only see what we call here as "askal and pusakal" askal are dogs, native dogs without owners while pusakal is a cat. But we have a big problem because of growing population of askal and pusakal here in the philippines. They are such a poor creatures. They don't have any place to live in and sometimes people tend to eat them also even if it's againts the law.

I think that there is more danger where you are, from the wild dogs, than there would be from foxes. Foxes will prey upon stray small animals. Some varieties of foxes are very small themselves. Stray wild dogs, on the other hand can be large and vicious.
