Atlanta to Ban Baggy Pants

I read with much pleasure the announcement in the news yesterday that Atlanta is considering banning the baggy pants style that seems to have taken over our society. I often see them worn by young people in my city(even my own grandsons). I have to wonder what the appeal is in this style. Maybe I am just out of touch, but I can't imagine that I would ever be proud to walk down the street with a young man who was dressed in this way. I know that when I was young people paid a lot of attention to the way they dressed. I am glad that I grew up in the era when you took pride in the way you dressed. They are also targeting the young ladies who wear their pants in such a way as to show off their thongs. Have these people lost their minds? They need to come to their senses!

When I was in high school we wore Jeans and sweatshirts and lumber jackets. How horrible, I cringe when I think of it! I really hate the baggy pant look especially when you have to look at their underwear. Fortunately around these parts the fashion trends are changing towards well dressed men like they used to be in the 50's and I have noticed a move from sports hats to fedoras and such. Although I hate the look I don't believe a ban is the way to go. I think people should have the right to choose for themselves as long as it isn't hurting anyone.

That is the point I am trying to make, whywiki. Some people do find this "style" offensive. I know that I wouldn't sit quietly by if one of my granddaughters was walking the street with her underwear on display for the world to see.

Well, firstly I think the youth of today takes pride in how they dress. It's just that the pride is not the same kind of pride your generation had. Secondly, every morning on my way to work i drive by a high school and laugh at the way these kids are dressed. I graduated only 7 years ago...but even in 7 years it hasn't changed whatsoever. I wasn't the best of dressers in my day and I'm still not. I don't wear pant suits or anything. I still like to rock out in jeans and t-shirts, but I never rocked the baggy jeans look and I still don't understand thongs! I think it's, a little outlandish, to completely ban a form of clothing in general. I can understand it in a certain environment but clothing designers make it and people wear it. It's interesting though. I don't think my city will ever get to ban something like that...we have too much syphillis, heroin and murder to deal with first. HA!

All I can say to you is what I've said a thousand times, raychill-good taste never goes out of style. Secondly, I'm very proud of the generation I come from. We had our fads when it came to dressing, too, but nothing so outlandish as what I see today. I believe that action should be taken when people have taken leave of their senses. Although this look might be appealing to you, it does offend the sensibilities of others.

I do not disagree with you. Nor did I say I liked this look seeing as I said "and laugh at the way these kids are dressed." Not to mention "but I never rocked the baggy jeans look and I still don't understand thongs!" So No, the look is not appealing to me nor did I say I liked the look or anything to that extent. I agree that good taste never goes out of style, but good taste, like beauty IS in the eye of the beholder. What I'm saying is that right now Kids like this look. Each generation has an "inappropriate" look to the older generation around them. The thing is the kids grow up and most of the time change. The other thing is, I still see 30 somethings and 40 somethings wearing this kind of clothing once in a while and it's a style even beyond teens. I'm not disagreeing with you like I said, I agree it's not a great style, but I just think it's unnecessary to ban a style.

I remember a time when if your panties were showing, you were mortified! Now they take pleasure in showing them off. Well, why not wear them over your pants if you truly want them to be seen.

Either that or refusing to wear clothing altogether, Elusive. These kids will push as far as they are allowed to go. That's only natural. This is why they have authority figures who are supposed to guide them.

Well, thats good that they ban that. But the problem is these kids may fin other ways to show off their underways even when the baggy is already banned. Surely they will make another style that would give them the freedom to do and show off their butts.

Then, all I can say for them, Zelmarq, is that they are truly in need of the guidance they have not received from childhood.

I sure wish they would put a ban on those stupid looking pants all over not just Atlanta! It amuses me no end when I see people wearing them since honestly I'm expecting them to fall off a person--no you're not out of touch, cause if you are so am I.

I don't mind if some people think I'm out of touch, pyewacket. In reality, I'm probably more in touch than they are. I am in constant contact with 3 generations of family, so there is no way I could ever be out of touch. I see and talk to my grandkids almost on a daily basis. I am proud that they still come to me for my advice when they have problems.

I heard there are lots of cities and states considering banning it. I don't blame them. My nephew's do it & it drives me crazy. Everytime I see them I give them a wedgie just to remind them that I hate the look. lol

Yes, Laurla, It seems that the younger generation could use a few pointers on how to dress properly. Of course, everyone has their own style, but we had to adhere to a dress code in school and I think these young people should also have to.

"The reason boys wear their pants so low and baggy is beca use thats the style. The reason that they where them so low is probably to get girls to like them, or cuz they just wanna be cool, and because when you wear them low it makes them baggy--everyone loves baggy pants. Wearing them low is called "sagging". They also probably sag them cuz they want to look like a punk.

Well, first off, by "baggy" do you mean just a little extra room in the pants? Or do you mean grossly oversized pants that fall off the butt and show off underwear? i do not believe in the censorship of expression. Freedome of expression is a part of our Constitution. What we choose to put on our bodies is a very ouvert form of expression. , but i don't i persoanlly think that grossly oversized pants that are falling off the guy look utterly ridiculous and i always have, but i do NOT believe these pants should be banned. i agree that on elementary through high school campuses pants should have to covor the undergarments for both males and females, but when not in school and when in college, they should have the right to wear whatever the hell they want.

I often wonder myself how ppl can go out of their homes dressed this way. Thankfully it seems someone is waking up to this. Growing up I can't imagine walking around with my panties hanging out of the back of my pants. LOL Have a good day!! AT PEACE WITHIN

While I agree that the style isn't particularly attractive, I have to wonder, is this a very good use of our tax dollars? How something like this would be enforced. Are they going to tell the clothing stores that these clothes must not be brought into the city, and fining them if they're caught selling them? Are they going to devote time and police officers to ticketing people who are caught wearing these clothes? And could that time be better spent dealing with real criminals and trying to stop crime and violence?

But remember some of the things you used to wear - bet your parents/grandparents hated them! I am a great believer in that every generation wants to be different from the last and if they leave it alone the baggy pants will disappear in time to be replaced by something else! I must say whether you like them or not it seems to me a mistake to ban kids from wearing something cos we don't like them! I mean what harm do they do at the end of the day? I remember my Grandad telling me I couldn't leave the house with my miniskirt - so I just wore a slightly longer skirt on top and removed it when I left the house! xxxx

I was in middle school when Boys started wearing their pants down showing their boxers 15 years ago. It amazes me that Guys still wear their pants down sagging. Everything else from 15 years is no longer in but sagging pants for some reason is still in.WHY?? I am glad they are banning sagging baggy pants because that fad does not look right I think it is nasty looking.

i like to wear baggy pants but not as low as my ankles just low enough to show the brim of my shorts under my pants nothing wrong with that i think but if they ban it im still wearing it the way i always wear them
