Back to School- the dreaded supply list

Hello,
I was just wondering from all the parents out there, do you receive a list of the supplies that the kids need for back to school or do you just shop for the staples. To me, the supply list sounded like a great idea. No guessing what the kids would need and you would only have to buy what was on the list. But over the last couple of years the list has gotten extremely specific. For example the binders required by different classes have to be a certain size (1-1" binder, 2- 1 1/2" binders). I do not understand why it would be detrimental to my childrens education if by chance I accidentally bought a 2" binder instead of a 1 1/2" binder. Also some of the teachers require specific brands of products like the highlighters and markers. What do you folks think on this?

I do have a school supply list for my son, and I buy what was on the list, plus extra as far as notebooks, and paper filler go. I bought them pretty cheap about a month ago. Yes, they do ask for specific things. For us, it is the Clorox wipe. I don't use this kind of chemical with my kid, but I understand that the teacher doesn't want the germs to spread. Now a day, school is totally different from when we were kids.

Isn't that the truth!! I can remember my mom saving the paper shopping bags for us to use as bookcovers when school started. Before all the stores switched over to plastic(guess I'm showing my age here), I used to save them as well, but I really didn't know why I did it, just that my mom did. I didn't have any children at the time. Then after I had a rather large collection of paper bags it dawned on me why she was saving them and why I didn't need to!
