Marriage customs defers from ethnic group to ethnic groups, nations to nations.
Though african marriages have been corroded by western culture and views of what marriage is.
For instance live in lovers is regarded as taboo in past 50years here in Nigeria, but today cohabition is common.
Traditionally african marriage is regarded as a cementing factor between families, communities etc, because care is taken when those intending to marry each other express their desire and intention to their families.
These families delegate emissary who will investigate the background family of the woman and the man, these investigation re neccessary 1, To find out if the family the woman or the man is to marry to are peaceful?, re they prone to unstable marriages? re they known to be theives?, re there any hereditary illnesses associated with any of these families etc.
If non is seen or minimally seen, they emissaries re to discusses their findings with the family that delegated them for such inquiry, if positive, a day will be scheduled for the two familes to introduce themselves, though the man's family re to make the introduction to the woman's family their son's intentions to marry their daughter.
