Should men shave their ARM PITS?

One of the things that I will not miss about summer is the frequent sighting of "arm-pit chia pets"! You see them everywhere - in the park, at the bank, in the bowling alley. Ugh, all that long, frazzled looking hair coming out from under some man's t-shirt or tank top or maybe he's shirtless, playing frisbee in the park. Or maybe he's just climbing out of your shower! If a woman let her pit hair grow like that, she'd be gross - just ask Julia Roberts! Pit hair makes you sweat more and then it traps the bacteria that grow happily in that dark, dank space and create B.O.. Now, I know that some of us prefer au naturale - count me out!
I ask my husband to just clip his pit hair down, so that it doesn't get outrageous. He says that shaving would seem too "metrosexual" for him but he doesn't mind clipping it. He says that he's always wanted to tame it a bit but didn't know what to do besides just shaving it off. I appreciate his effort. It's just a little bit of extra grooming that I wish more men would consider. What do you think? Men, do you shave your arm pits? Women, do you wish more men would?

It was a joke. I like a man to shave his face and keep himself well groomed, but I really do not care if he shaves the rest of his other body parts.

Men most certainly do shave, their faces even if not their armpits. What's so unmanly about a well-groomed man? It shows that he cares about himself and the people around him. Why should women be held to a higher standard of grooming just to be considered "feminine"? Well, to each his/her own. Thanks for responding!

Nice post. I really would mind if my boyfriend or any man would shave their armpit. It's quite odd if they do, you know. =) I hope they wouldn't really. It's won't look right. LOL

i won`t even answer this directly...instead i`ll give you the flip side whih to me is much worse....
i know a couple of girls who don`t shave, and insist on earing skimpy tops.
i also know a transgendered man (used to be a woman) who doesn`t shave his pits, and it just looks gross, because when you go from being a girl who shaves to a man who lets it all grow, the hair comes in all thick, brittle and nasty!!!!
shudder :)

HaHA! Great observations and question! I don't know, I am on the fence on this one. On the one hand, it is one of the things that makes a man 'manly,' yet,I do hate to see it hanging out in certain circumstances! Perhaps if more men would use their manners and not wear clothing which allows their armpit hair to show when in eating establishments and other public places it wouldn't be such an issue! I feel as though a sleeveless shirt on a man should be reserved for the beach, around a pool and around the home. I don't feel they are approapriate for public. Just my opinion.

I don't mind men have their hair in their arm pits. It is very normal. However, I do mind women have it. It is better for women to shave their hair in the arm pits well. Otherwise no matter how beautiful dress you put on, you will still leave a negative impression to others.

My husband shaves his armpits. Hair made him sweat too much and he would get pit stains on his shirts. After trying a lot of different types of deodorant, to no avail, he started shaving them. I kind of like it because when he puts his arm around my neck at night in bed and his shirt is off, is gross arm pit hair isn't rubbing on me.

I wouldn't want men to shave their arm pit hair. I understand professional swimmers doing that, but every day men I would say no. Just trim it back, not too short, but not so long that it is noticeably disgusting while wearing a T-shirt.

Ugh! I know what you mean! I think they should trim it at least to keep it tame. I've seen mean that only had a little "fluff" and that didn't seem so bad...although I still wonder why it is even necessary to keep ANY hair under there. Other men though have that long, straggly, disgusting...ugh, there are no words for it...the ones that really get me are when it's so long it sticks out from under a t-shirt.
I'm lucky that my guy is a red head and has minimal body hair...except for on his head where hair belongs. I think I've let my legs get hairier than his at times. And his under arn hair stays neatly under the t-shirts that he always wears. My ex-hubby...had hair everywhere EXCEPT on his head where it belonged! He tries to keep it semi-tame though even if it did involve me trimming it on his shoulders and back...another ugh, but it was better than leaving it wild!

LOL! Why is it that the guys with the most body hair seem to have the least hair on their heads? Maybe nature is trying to compensate?! lol I have to pin my husband down in a half-nelson in order to give him TWO eyebrows instead of one! And he screams the most terrible curses whenever I wax his back and shoulders! I can't stand hair in "unfortunate" places, it's so beastly. I don't equate beastliness with manliness. Surprisingly, I didn't even have to mention his armpit hair to him (although I was always aware of it.) Apparently, it even bothered him. Since he trimmed his armpit hair really short he says that he sweats less. Of course he sweats less! It's like shaving off a carpet! I'm trying to get him to realize that he would get less mosquito bites if he would trim his other body hair more often. Mosquitos and other insects are attracted to the smell of sweaty, hairy bodies. As a matter of fact, HE'S my best mosquito repellent. If I'm outside with him, the bugs will always bite him first! He'll have 10 bites and I won't have any! I try to tell him between his sweaty hair and all the extra deodorant he has to wear because of that hair - the bugs can't resist. lol

I lean more toward the other view, ZD. I think I would laugh if I saw a man with shaved underarms. Armpit hair is manly to me. I don't often agree with radio show host Michael Savage, but he got this one right when he said something to the effect that men are becoming more and more feminized in our society. I definitely agree. If a person(be it man or woman) has good grooming habits, ie bathing and/or showering daily a little underarm hair is not going to get me bent out of shape.

Ah, yes, wise1, you said the magic word - a LITTLE underarm hair. I'm not talking about a little private fuzz. I'm talking, dude, you need braids and barettes! I'm talking a comb and ponytail holders! Scrunchies for the pits! lol Besides, attention to grooming doesn't make you feminine. Manliness is born of a confidence, a sense of capability, an inner sense of the universe and your rightful place in it. THAT'S what's missing in men nowadays, that's why they are harder to count on - not the fact that they may shave their pits or carry "man-bags". LOL
p.s. I agree, they don't make them like they used to! I truly miss men of my grandfathers' caliber...

Ya know I have never really noticed it on guys. Could be cause my guy doesn't have a very hairy body so he doesn't have a lot of pit hair to complain about. That and it doesn't get that hot around here so I very rarely see shirtless guys and the ones that are don't have pit hair. Now I do think guys should shave other parts, ya know like their nether region. Not bald or anything cause that is just weird but at least keep it trimed. Mine shaved himself bald there once I couldn't for the life of me bring myself to sleep with him, I felt like a damn pediphile cause he looked like a really tall 12 y/o. He's not allowed to shave his face for the same reason.

That's funny! I prefer my husband to wear a beard, at least 3 or four days worth. He looks more masculine to me. I almost can't stand to be kissed by a hairless, soft face! I agree with you that grooming and trimming should encompass the whole body. I don't like out of control hair in pits, on backs or on toes and knuckles...or in the "nether region"! Good to hear from you.

I think for some men who has lots of hairs and long ones should trim or shave a bit. Sometimes its gross when men sweats alot and their armpits stinks because of the hairs. Trimming would be fine, im glad my other half only has few hairs.

I am a man and I think it depends on the person whether he wants to shave his armpit or not for men. Its has been accepted for men for ages not to shaved their armpits. In terms of hygiene I agree with you. I don't shave my armpit because I won't like the feeling of itchiness when it starts to grow back so I'll be force to shave it daily. But I do trim them short every once in a while. :-)

I'm a man, but I don't shave my armpit. I prefer this as what it was, because it might irritate my skin. Not to mention the feeling of uneasiness it causes, especially the burning sensation after shaving. I only trim it, I also would put deodorant or body spray to protect myself from odor-causing germs.
I believe that Ms. Julia Roberts was once caught by media waving her hand with hairs on her armpit, now that's gross!LoL

Metro? Lol. Gay? I'm bi and don't shave. Stereotypes suck.
I personally find it attractive when men trim, but don't shave, pit hair.
