Here is the actual definition: A torrent is a powerful directed force, for example of water or a whirling wind. It may refer to something else, often derived from this meaning:
A .torrent file is used in peer-to-peer technology, specifically in a BitTorrent client program. A .torrent file is used to download other files.
I've used torrents before it even got popular and having all these new easy programs to use.
I stopped using them because you have to upload at the same time, which is very bad for you.

Its overhyped, the speed is not that great as they said.several of the promising features fall flat in reality.
If you are a heavy downloader than you have to subscribe for high speed broadband, instead of expecting that torrents are going to bring you GB's of stuff in few hours, thats plain bullshit.

The speed depends on the people who uses it, so if you want more speed, contribute more. That's how torrents work. Also there are "private" trackers that requires a login and has all kind of statistics (downloaded, uploaded, ratio etc.), which makes the seeders seed more and leechers leech less.
