I once lost a mobile DJ gig in Washington D.C. because, when I called to chat with the client about their party, they called my boss and told him, "we don't want him because he sounds like a hick". I'm a southerner and proud of it. I would never, ever change a thing about my accent because it's part of who I am. Some folks, though, feel differently. They hire speech coaches to help them lose their accent so they can sound more "professional". Do you have an accent? Are you proud of it or ashamed? Would you try and "lose" it to help you succeed?
