The emergence of self concept

The elementary school child is engaged in what Ericksen characterized as the stage industry v. interiority. This is a crucical period in development because the child ahs initial exsperience with work and learns the importance of productive work. Consistent failure would lead to a sense of inferiority, harmful to the self-concept. Its implication to teacher behaviour is that the teacher should be alert and see that a child does not have to face tasks which he cannot perform with reasonable effort.
