felony firearm possession

can a person who has been off parole for 5 years and has not been in any sort of trouble be charged a felony firearm possession for defending his property,wife and kids even though a weapon was never brought out or shown during the altercation?

Can you prove that you did not brandish a weapon? Do you have a weapon? Is your weapon registered?
