How often should you update your spyware scanner?

Last week, I tried to run my spy-ware scanner, cause I noticed that my computer was running slow and thought it might be a virus. But, when I did, it kept insisting that my "definitions" were old and asked to download new ones. And, it wanted me to update them.
I'd never heard of this "definitions" term before when it comes to spy-ware. Was it trying to say that my spy-ware zapper is out of date or needed to be updated? Anyway, I let it go through with the update and afterwards everything seemed to work just fine.
And, now I am worried that my spy-ware scanner is not up to date (since the updates are not automatic) or doing it's job as well as it should. How often should the spy-ware scanner or spy-ware remover be updated? Are there really that many new viruses for it to detect every week?

I always check updates daily because my virus scanner (NOD32) asks me every day when I connect to the internet. It's recommened to update the latest version of definitions. Actually, if you can, check it every day, it takes about a minute, not more. But you can keep safe your PC from hackers who wants to know all of your passwords, credit card numbers, etc.

You definitely need to keep it up to date. I have my anti-spyware and anti-virus protection to update automatically and let me know when the program needs to me updated. I also have it set up to run a weekly scan. The way I feel is you can never have too much protection on your computers.

I definitely will do that now that I know what to do. I guess I thought it took care of those things itself.

You should always download new updates for your virus scanner AND spyware scanner whenever they become available.
I use Webroot Spy Sweeper and Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security.
I love pc-cillin!

It is maybe a kind of virus that can't be killed by you spy-ware scanner.
For my virus scanner,it is automatically updated everyday when opening my computer. It only takes me two minutes. My advice is that setting it be updated automatically. If you do that, messages you don't need wouldn't bother you again.
However, several viruses that appeared on my computer can't be zapped. That makes me crazy.I need to change my virus scanner to a new one to protect my computer.

hi beautyqueen, the definitions are actually kind of tools for recognition of any new virus formed or created because you may be knowing that everyday many new viruses are created and released to the world wide web portal and so any body can come across them and so any computer can get affected by these new viruses even when we have a very effective and good spyware or anti-virus software installed on our PC.so the anti-virus and spyware and similar companies involved in their removal are also always on guard to check these new viruses and detect the new things in them which are infective and at the same time escapable from their anti-virus or spyware software launched..thats why they provide users with a facility called "updates" or "virus definition updates" to be more precise..so that when we update our software it captures from the website of the owner of the that particular anti-virus manufacturing company or you can say that anti-virus selling site the latest tools to tackle with the newly formed or released viruses which we can encounter any time..and these are called definitions..so its all for our safety..and for that reasons its always advised by these companies to keep our software up-to-date which means we should keep it updating on a daily basis..and its not at all time consuming and takes only a few minutes to seconds depending upon your connection speed..so for your software too i think it would be more safe if you update it regularly..again its not necessary to update it manually as you can set it on 'AUTOMATIC UPDATES ON' or depending upon whatever is described in your software..and it would be easy and hassle free for you too..

We need to constantly update the virus definition as there are numerous new viruses emerge in the network each seconds. Updated virus definition will helps to prevent your computer from being attacked. Old definition may not be able to defend against the new viruses.
For me, I would update my virus definition and spy-ware updates on a weekly basis especially if use the laptop frequently to go online.
