I just tried to do a write up on this, but somewhere in internet heaven is where my original post now resides! Anyway, calling all big beautiful women, fat queer chicks, fat allies, butch fatties, anyone who is between the sizes of 1x and 6x who is fat-identified who wears clothing and is within driving distance of NYC:The annual Fat Girl Fleamarket is being held on September 29th from 11 am to 8 pm on 208 West 13th St. in New York City. From the site, "The Fat Girl Fleamarket is an amazing and cheap shopping day...All items are priced below $10.00 with most items being under $5.00" This event is to raise money for http://www.nolose.org, an organization commited to ending the oppression of fat people, and fat queer people! Follow this link for information on volunteering, donating clothing and accessories, directions, etc:http://www.fatgirlfleamarket.com Who doesn't like cheap clothing that goes to a good cause? People come from all over the country to shop at the fat girl fleamarket - hope to see you there too!

I wish I could get there too Ravenladyj. Too far for me to drive. My sister told me she is going to NYC for a baseball game the same day. But, they are going by train.

Where do you live, Ravenlady? I live in upstate New York, and Southern Vermont (kinda). I don't know exactly how much time it takes to get there, but I'm definitely looking to carpool - I'm going to get my sister to drive, and I have a friend that might go. My mother may go, but she may not. Well anyway, tell me where you live, and I could attempt to see if anybody on the NOLOSE livejournal blog is carpooling from your area (and that includes myself or anybody I know personally). I am definitely gonna get there, even if I have to scrimp and scrape all month to save for it! I want new (used) clothes. Fat girl clothes are the best - and I'm a 5x, so it is hard to find cute clothes and I have personally seen clothing that women have gotten at the flea for a STEAL. Lots of the stuff is very high-quality, because a lot of these women and people wear clothes that is specifically made by companies that make great clothing of QUALITY for fat people. I'm talking big on batik, and all the other fat-acceptance oriented companies, the ones that use big and beautiful models to show off their clothing. These people are not poor, and they aren't all gay either (in spite of what some bigot said in a previous comment - earlier on in this discussion)!

That really makes me wish I lived close to New York, celestial. Maybe this is something that will spread to other parts of the country. I just love flea markets, and as you say it is going towards a worthy cause.

It is so hard to find plus size clothing that is reasonably priced. A flea market that caters to the plus size woman is a great idea!

I really hopes this catches on in other areas as well worldwise1, Because truly is hard to find clothing for big woman especially where I live they only go to a size 3x I usuall have to go out of state to find clothing to fit me since they are any special places like that I even had to go to the big and tall mens clothing to get clothing like t-shirts and shorts. I think if it is a big hit then other will try to duplicate it which is good especially if the money is going to help causes. Girls(women) cross your fingers and hope and wish like crazy that it does catch on like wild fire and we will have the fleamarkets everywhere atleast once a year or more.

I wish I lived closer to New York City as well, but I'm not terribly far away (a few hour's drive) so I'm going to try and get there! I hope that more people do fat girl flea markets in different venues around the country - it is a great idea!

I followed the link you gave and it states the fatgirlfleamarket is for everyone, you don't have to be gay to go to this event! I wish I didn't have to work that weekend. I would love to go to NYC. Never been there. And who doesn't love to find a bargain when it comes to clothes!

Yeah, it is too bad you have to work that weekend! I was thinking of organizing something similar, or at least a fat girl clothing swap, in Burlington, VT. Being a college town, I'm sure it would go over quite well!

Wow do I wish I lived in New York! I would love to go to this event! I just popped into the website and looked around, and I'm thinking, this would be great! Too bad I live in the middle of nowhere, Michigan, and have no transportation. Anyway, I hope you have fun there! =) By the way, I sent you a friend request based on a discussion from someone who didn't want to be your friend... I know that sounds silly, but I was so curious I had to search out who they were talking about and add you. =P

Hey there - thanks again for adding me as a friend, and for contributing your nice comments and two cents to these discussions! I will pop over to your discussions soon and comment on them, so that you can go up in points...hopefully I'll do enough tonight that will help me go up in points as well. I'm trying to respond to every comment left for me over the past few days, and boy, do they accumulate fast! I noticed that this was a featured article on "life" and I thought that was cool! It made my night. Then I re-read the comment left by that person who is homophobic, and realized that she made some serious assumptions about the class of gay people, which made me furious! It was really homophobic if you look at it. Oy!

I would have been interested if it was run by someone other than largely obese lesbians. Where are the heterosexual large women organizations that should be doing this? I am certain that many large women will not attend this because of who sponsors this flea market, and many of these may be poor and unable to afford to buy from the specialty shops.

If you look at the website, it clearly states that you do not have to be gay to shop there. So there's no reason you or any other straight person couldn't go.

You know what - it is organized by people who just so happen to be fat and QUEER identified, but it isn't specifically for gay people. However, if you're going to shop there, you ARE SUPPORTING a cause called NOLOSE...fat queer women, trans people, and their allies. It is what somebody like you might consider a big sin fest. You're welcome to come, but narrow-minded people generally don't support queer events. And we think of ourselves as FAT, not obese. Obese is derogatory.

"I would have been interested if it was run by someone other than largely obese lesbians" *gruff!* Just out of curiousity, not that i dont already know the answer but what DIFFERENCE does it make WHO runs the show? Bottomline is, its a GREAT idea with a positive backing and purpose adn its open TO EVERYONE....If "many large women will not attend this because of who sponsors" well they miss out then dont they and all the more clothes for us! Poopoo on you! You should be ashamed fo yourself!
