DVR issues...

I was told by our satellite installation guys that we can not have a DVR because our cable line enters in the house through an outlet where we have our cable modem. They said that where it enters the house it could not be split using any type of splitter. They said that if we wanted one then they would have to install a new outlet which would show on the front of our house....???? I'm puzzled. Everyone I know has a DVR hooked up and no one has ever been told this same thing. Does anyone out there know if this is true?
