Administrative Assistant my foot!!! I'm a receptionist is that I am. I have no work to do but answer phones and courier an occasional package. I've surffed the net, talked on the phone, talked to my co-workers, read, played games, walked around... you name it I've done it. What else can I do to pass the time besides quiting and talking the boss about my inactivity?

Well, well, I am a good worker just like you all but i cannot lie. I am not bored. As a matter of fact, I love my job. The thing is sometimes if my boss is not around (not on aregualr basis) i get slack and get on some sites like this and write. Soemtimes I check out schools in the field I want to go or I play games. When my conscience hits me I get up and do some follow up letters and call and stay away from the internet. YEs though a chrisitan I cheat too, I am guilty too. Anyway since I have my computer at home I no longer do that. I work until late and go to bed knowing that I havenot cheated of my boss's time. Soemtimes i htink I am too honest to be any good but thats how I am. I feel guilty when I do it but if yoiu really are bored tell me what else can you do? There are certain things that only my boss can do because Iam not a lawyer so?

I would love to love my work. I haven't even had a chance to love my work. I didn't go to school to become a receptionist. Every time I apply for an admin assistant position they offer me this crap. If they don't give me anything to do there is NOTHING to do.

When things are slow at my workplace I clean. And organize. If you already have people there to clean then I would just work on my own little workspace. If you haven't cleaned the desk off and really cleaned it in a long time then I would do that. Or start going through some old files and see if there is anything that you can get rid of. Sweep your area. Find out if anyone else has a workload that they could use help with, even if it is just something little. Ask if you could go pick up lunches or do a store run for any office supplies for a worker that is busy. The best part about doing this is that while you are killing time and making the day go faster they are things that won't go unnoticed by your boss. You will be more respected by him, her or them. Who knows...maybe you can work your way up in the company?!?
I do electronic assembly but I never say no to jobs that are less than that. I will do anything that needs done without anyone having to ask me to do it. If something looks dirty- I clean it whether it is the bathroom, the floor, a table- even if it not my job to do it or it isn't a place that I ever work. (Too bad I am not like this at home!! My house would be spotless!!) I would do dishes if they needed done. I would prep some parts, which by the way is really boring! (something that you wouldn't need to do but maybe you could fill the paper in the copier or refill an ink cartridge?)
There are TONS of things you could do to pass the time that won't ever get you into trouble!
My bosses love me and the only thing about me that makes them unhappy is that I am only part time (my choice- not theirs)! They ask me all the time when I am going to go full time and they always tell me what a great job I do and how valuable I am to them.

Ok. I can possibly clean my desk. That will probably take 1/2 hour. I have asked if there is anything I do for some other employees. They have nothing for me. Some work here is confidential. Once I refill the photocopiers and fax machines (which is a whole 5 min) I'm left with nothing to do again. They love me here and would have a kaniption if I left. Which I'm contemplating. If there is nothing to do...there is NOTHING to do.

Tell me about it. If I didn't get on here I would be bald from pulling out my hair.

i hate it when i have nothing to do at work! if it's just for a few days then it's ok but if it happens all the time then it'll drive me crazy. i need things to do! whenever i'm bored at work, i'll talk to my colleagues or surf the net and also chat with friends on IMs. i'll also take a walk at times, usually that helps.

whenever i have nothin to do in the office i just sit in front of the computer and look bussy with it. like im studying rip software, or learning more about adobe photoshop, although i cant understand how adobe works. im a large format printer engineer that's why i have to learn anything or everything about graphics. and if ever i can't dodge my boss's eyes i just puch-out my time card and have undertime. at least it just happen once in a month i guess. cause we always do field works, and we are not obligued to go back at the office after every service.

Wow, at least you can surf the net. The last boring admin job I had restricted all non-business use websites. I used to call the IT guy, "The Nazi" because I swore all he did was monitor our email and website use.

I get bored at work and I'm not even an Admin! But I hear you on that and I know our receptionists get bored as well as my friend who I chat with through-out the day.
To not risk losing your job have you thought about seeing if there is more you can do? Help someone else out or maybe re-organize something you think could be done better? I mean, that would be the first suggestion. Find more work to do. Ask for more work to do.
If you don't want to do that (i mean, who really wants to WORK at work right! ha ha) than I myLot a lot at work. If you like writing, try joining Helium.com or Associated Content. You can earn extra money and write (not much extra, but I mean.. you could write)... Um
besides that I guess you kind of covered it all. Listen to the radio?
