The Internet versus Television

The advent of the computer brought a new realm into the lives of our society. As computers were made available in the United States interest broadened worldwide and became an even greater phenomenon with the introduction of the internet. Now exists communication over greater distances in almost real time. No longer do we need to write a letter that would take days to weeks to arrive. We have email and online chat rooms, instant messaging, texting even a novice could be an expert after a few days. So with this change one wonders of the affect it has had on television viewing since now we can get just about all the news online surfing the web as you would get from television and more. Not only could you watch news but chat with your friends online and discuss it. Of course there are sporting events that you won't see online and also daily programs of prime time television. Even that has changed now with new technology that allows us to view television programs internationally right on your PC. I for one don't really care much for television. All the programs that exist now are really nothing more that newer versions of programs from the early years of televsion with new "actors". Frankly television bores me and I do not find it entertaining. I would rather be entertained online surfing the web. It is amazing the things you can find both accidentally and intentionally. Not to mention online gaming such as World of Warcraft, which has about 8 million subscribers. No amount of viewing will allow you to learn about topics such as health and nutrition as easily as through the internet. If you have a problem with your computer or anything else you could do what everyone else does..."Google It" and you will more than likely find a solution on one of the hundreds of forums that will result from your search. Something you could never do through television. Let's face it television is completely boring.

There's an article about a recent survey of over 2,400 households in the US, Britain, Germany, Japan and Australia that found that 19% of consumers spend 6 hours or more per day on the Internet, yet only 9% of them said they spend the same length of time watching TV. 66% said they view 1 to 4 hours of TV per day, compared with 60% who reported using the same amount of personal time on the Internet.

Today be sure the internet wins the television in my opinion. I am no longer interested in spending more time on TV. I'd like to take good advantage of the internet.

I'll take the PC over the TV anytime. You are absolutely right, the internet gives the consumers two important things: more versatility and control. However, I don't think TV will die out yet. I come from the third world, and here most people don't even know that a cyberworld exists. Besides, use of the PC requires a lot of skill (the TV on the other hand lives up to its name: the idiot box). It could be a while before everyone becomes computer literate.

TV broadcasting is also incredibly expensive. 500,000 watt transmitter and 1500 foot antenna towers are common. Any idea what all that costs compared to some servers?
