These abbreviations are called text-speak, and it's a fine way to chat if you are on a cell phone and you have limited space to send a message. Typing this way saves characters and time when texting, which is much harder than typing on a keyboard.
But when people are typing on keyboards and expecting to communicate with other people, it's a bad habit. If the language is misused often enough, then these words will take the place of the real words over time. The language will be poorer for that.

this sint a bad habit but hwen comes it to letter and something which is to be formal at that time one can not use these kinda words..but for messaging and posting in orkut or mylot where ppl can undrstand it,ther these slangs can be used..and the person to whom we are using, they must understand this slang..but even the person understands,we cant use it in letter and other formal things..it should not be habitual..but this aint a bad or good habit..it acts its role according its usage in different places..!
