This seems really unfair to me...what about you?

My mom works at an elementary school....my friends mom does too. My mom works with special needs, my friends mom is a teacher. I heard that my friend got a job at the same school, and I thought it would be fun to work there because I could be an aid in one of my nieces classes. Well, when I want to apply, they say that I can not work there because my mom does. They don't want family members working together there. Yet, my friend works there (so does her mom) and theres also this guy that works there with his mom. They say I can't because I was just after the day they made this rule where family can't work together there. Yet, there's at least 2 people I know who they are allowing to work there even though their parents do. Does this seem fair to you?

That is the policy at a lot of places. It is called 'nepotism', having family members work together. Actually, where I work, they just recently relaxed the rules together. Now family members can work in the same department, just a long as one is not supervising the other. The reason that your friends can continue to work there is called 'grandfathering'. What that means is that because they already worked there before they made the rule, they can continue to do so. But no new family members can be hired. And really, I have to live with my family - I don't want to work with them, too!!!

lol! yes I understand all thta (i didnt know the technical terms though). My sister and her husband worked at the same Home Depot. After they got married one of them had to transfer to another Home Depot store. I just really would have worked there because I'll never complain about seeing my nieces too much! :)

Hi Lily! Yes, it is unfair. Have you talkend on the principal of the school or to any other people who got higher positions there? How about with your mom? Have you discussed this issue with your mom? If those 2 people were able to get in there, you can, too. And after all, if you believe that you have the talent and capability that you can share with the school, why not apply and let them see it? They should give you the chance to work there. :) Take care and God bless! \(",)_

Thank you :) The thing is the two people I know got in there before the school made the rule, so they see it as it would be unfair to fire them...but they still won't hire me. I've talked to my mom about it a couple of times and she just says that they won't let me, I'm not allowed.

Seems fair, it would not be fair for them to fire the people they already hired, but since it was a rule change then it should be enforced exactly as they put it.

I see your point, I would never ask them to fire those people! I wouldn't want that, that would be unfair. But I like, JUST missed the deadline. I mean I was getting ready to do it when they said I couldnt.

That doesn't saound fair. There has to be a booklet or paper stating the rules and regulations. Don't let that stop you from working in the schools. I am sure there is another scholl in the district that would love to have you. Good luck.

Well the reason I wanted this particular school was because if I did work there it would have been in one of my nieces classes, and I would have been working around one of my best friends + my mom. And it was the elemtary school I went to, so a lot of teachers I like still work there. I'm not sure I would enjoy another school.

Yep, same junk goes on at my daughter's school. One teacher tried to get her neice hired on the same week another got her daughter a job there. However, they told the first lady relatives could not work in the same school! WTH??? If you really want to push it, go in and tell them you need to see their policies. They have them and every school has to provide them upon request. If it's not written in there, you can complain to the school board and fight this. However there is the chance though they will give your Mom attitude over this, so it may not be worth it.

I would have been really mad at that school too. This whole thing seems unfair to me! I wouldn't want to fight the whole school for a few reasons. One, I'm not much of a fighter, I'm pretty shy. Two, my mom already gets enough crap from the school, like you said she doens't need more. And three, even if I won and got a job there they would hate me and probably wouldn't make it pleasant for me.

I found another job :) I work a nighttime shift at a PetSmart PetsHotel. I like working with animals, but I think I may have enjoyed the school job better.

it is totally unfair. what you should do is go to the 'powers that be' and point this out to them. maybe (i hope for your sake) that its just an oversight, if not, fight for what you want!

Life seems to back hand you when you aren't looking. But, Lily, since you are getting ready to do this night work, trust me, you should just concentrate on that. Graveyard is a whole lot harder than working normal shift, you body rythems are not set up for it. Be glad that you were turned down so you can worry about this night job you have.

Just think of this way, it's their lost not yours... and if their adminstration is like that where in they favor others... then it is better that you don't work there because you might not like working with that kind of administration in the future...

Yeah, I understand all that-but this would have been a really great thing for me because I would have gotten to work in one of my nieces classes (I would see them both everyday thoug), I would have been working around one of my best friends and I would have been working around a guy I liked! hehe. All that would have made it easy to ignore the administration.

In fact, I think God is fair, and if he closed the door, you will certainly leave a window, not encounter complained against unfair, we should strive to find their own path.

Kide of unfair, but you know, life is not always fair. There are quite some rules in the world that are fair to some and not for others, it goes the same with the Law. Anyway, wish you could finally get a job you like. B.rgds, Andy

It is quite unfair. It seems that you really want to get the job. They reject you by making rules.no matter. You can get another better job with your power.

yeah, definitely, it is unfair! because there's an act of discrimination there. they should treat you some respect. they don't treat you equal. but i guess, you should look for another job, to show them what you've got.

No, it does not seem fair. Under typical conditions I see both sides to the issue... but this is bogus, seeing as there's already two pairs of people that violate the standard.

it is unfair , really,.. this is called nepotism in indonesia. But don't you ever beg to be inside that school. I bet you will gain another better job that that school and a better salary in another place of work.

By the looks of it, it's really unfair...but this also happened to me or us...I am working in a university for the last 23 years as an educator; 3 years ago, my daughter, who graduated BS in Nursing was hired as clinical instructor in the same university I am working...I am aware of the 'unwritten law' about family members working in the same company...in fact 23 years ago, when I was hired as a college professor, my sister was also hired as a high school teacher, then moved as a college professor a few years after. Of course my daughter was hired not because I was in that university, but because of her own merit...she graduated rank 1 or on top of class 2003, and was a national finalist in the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines...in other words, I was told that hers was on the basis of highest merit, and not on connection. I don't know, maybe it's an exception to the rule as the College of Nursing really needed an instructor that time who is exceptionally above average...anyway, you try a little 'snooping' and find out if there was a violation of the company rules of that school in question...God bless.

You could raise this issue to the school and write them a formal letter indicating the issue of nepotism. They must be firm of their rules.

It is not the end of the world.Personally speaking, I am numb to face such unfair things. It is not your fault. It the sadness of the society and human being. There will not be extremely fair. The most important thing is to bravely face it and solve it.I think,it is the first lesson for you to take after graduation.Come on, do not lose your hope.
