The hottest telecom product, about to be introduced now, is at the moment UMA IP-Mobile, it's a seamless switching between VOIP and GSM. This will allow users to call for free or at very low prices. Who will profit is the users. Who will loose is the biggest telecom companies because they are not very flexible.

Well, I did a little research and I'm still confused. I found this statement: "Operators that own Wireline and Wireless Networks see more value in CTP deployment as it give them a way to increase Wireline revenues and offload Wireless Access and GSM Core Network" here: http://mobileenterprise.typepad.com/weblog/2005/02/uma_vindication.html
Which seems to negate your stand. Am I totally confused? Yes. Could you shed some light on the topic?

Well, there will be some changes in the years to come. It sounds reasonable that wires should continue giving profit back to the owners.
I wouldn't put my money into GSM-networks now. Nokia's director recently announced that all Nokia phones will have UMA technology in 3-5 years.
Today we need cables, usually, to connect to the Internet, but I guess it will be a rat race with many loosers when the WLAN technology is improved, range and speed. It's cheaper to mount a wireless repeater, much less expensive than wires.

Thanks for the explanations. Three to five years seems like a long time, in view of the technology available right now. It has to happen, though, all things considered.
Guess I won't put my money on any of it at this point. I think communications will undergo some serious changes in the next year or two.

Hi!
I think this will force the major phone companies to lower their phonerates. The prices we are seeing today are crazy!
But the new UMA tecnology will probably ruin a lot of the telecoms of today. There are simply not anybody who wants to pay fro this services enymore. I think FABONET will revolutionice the telecom industry!
