Congratulations on getting your kitty. All of the cats we have ever had like the posts covered in carpeting. One way to get him to using the scratching post is to put some catnip on it. They are hilarious to watch with the catnip. My I give you a hint to keep you kitty from using the door jam to scratch on? Put some Vaseline on the door jams as high as he can reach. Cats don’t like the feel of it on their paws. Once they get used to it being there you can remove it.

Your welcome One of the best toys for cats are those pull tabs in the 1/2 gallon milk or juice cartons.. our cat just loves them. She has them hideen all over the hose. She likes to chase them around and play with them under the door. Reaching her paw under the door to capture it. After a while we will gather them all up and start over.

Well I probably won't be any use to you, because all the types and brands I know of are only available in Europe, so you will have different manufacturers. However, mine all love their scratching post, which is more of a little "cat village" really, - a big thing with various levels to jump on, some toys full of cat-nip hanging from the various landing levels for them to play with, and about three different "2trunks" for them to scratch, which are made of natural wood and rope. There are also some cylinders tht they can jump through - it's great:-))

Yes - guess you could have a look on eBay. They are quite large, and might cost a lot in postage, but they can be flat-packed and self-assembled if you're good at that kind of thing! Personally, I admit I'm hopeless at that kind of thing - but that's what men are for! LOL!

my cats just look wood.. Anything really to do their scratching on.. we have a few logs outside they just love to do it on.. I don't think though your going to want that because they do make messes with all the wood... Your cat might not like it now because it's new but he might like it after awhile sometimes it takes cats a bit..

THE best 'scratching post' I have ever had for my kittens, and I have had a few.....got 6 2 month olds now is to tack a piece of carpeting to your wall, close to your furniture and than whenever you bsee them tearing at your furniture, you turn them around, and onto the carpeting

My cat has this fascination with scratching door frames. I live in an apartment and this is NO good! So what I ended up doing, well my Dad built it for me, was getting 3 pieces of wood and screwing them together to fit super snug on the door frame. It's all enough that he won't scratch above it and it reaches to the floor. He LOVES it. Scratches it up all the time! All you have to do is vacuum up the the little bits of wood every so often.
You can buy the wood pre-cut and everything from Home Depot. You might even be able to get them to screw it (or nail it) together. Just measure your door frame. That is...if you have a door frame to put this on. Mine is on my bedroom door which I don't close. The good thing is you don't have to nail the wood onto the frame, so you can just pull it right off at any time.
Cats LOVE to have variety in their scratching. Carpet, Sisal and Wood are their favorites and this usually helps them with their love of scratching wood.

Good luck! I think it's a great idea and my cat seriously loves it! just make sure you measure it well and everything. I'm not even sure how much it'll cost you, but yeah it's completely removeable and i'm sure your cat will love it (at least I hope) you have a good one too! :)

My cats first fasination is with our carpets and carpet like or textured furniture fabric.
He has a scratching post which he also scratches, but refuses to stop scratching at the carpeting all the same. I can train him for everything else it seems, but I can not seem to break him of this.

Go to your pet store and ask for scratching posts. They are big wooden rectangular log covered with carpet and are about 32 inches high. Usually they are cut from trees and the sides planed. Some of them will have a stuffed toy with catnip inside. It has to have a base so when your kitten becomes bigger, he won't knock it over. My son got his kitten a wooden log with carpet and toys attached to the top. You can also try this site for ideas. http://cats.about.com/od/illegalclawing/tp/scratch_posts.htm

to add a bit of humor... i am my cat's scratching post! i wear sweats all year long around the house because the little furbrats love to reach up and extend those claws and well... they especially love doing it when i'm sitting at the computer. :-D so i wear sweats and trim toes and suck it up. silly beasties. hahaha!
