Do you hand out candy? Or other things like pencils, balloons, little toys? We usually hand out candy like most people. My grandfather used to hand out pencils to the school age kids and balloons to the younger crowd. Last year we took my daughter to a different neighborhood and they gave her dress up jewelry, toothbrushes with blues clues on it, stamps, whole candy bars...all kinds of stuff. Her bag was full in an hour. I can see why people don't always like to give candy. Kids have fun with other stuff too!!

Actually I give candy to my Niece and Nephew and thats it. Sometimes I'll go help my Mom hand it out but it's been awhile since I've done that too. I used to take my Niece and Nephew trick or treating every year but last year they decided they were too old for it.

We have just been giving out candy in the past. We lived in base housing and had over 100 trick or treaters each year for the last two years. We couldn't afford to give out anything else!
This year, we live in a really small town. I'm thinking about making little treat bags with candy and stickers and pencils and things. The only problem I can see with that, is making sure that my husband remembers which things to give to the two different age groups!

Usually my family doe'snt give out anything. Not that we're stingy or anything, just that we buy candy to give out but noone shows up to get it. So I usually end up getting to eat it myself, which is nice. Everyone loves candy.
And I like the idea of giving out other things has well. Like you said kids enjoy things like toys and stuff, so why not give that out has well. Sure candy is traditional, but sometimes its good to go against tradition.

We have handed out various things on different years. One year I did the pencils for older children and plastic trinkets for the younger ones. I have done candy, little juice containers and other items too. It is getting harder and harder as so many things can be harmful. The trinkets might be swallowed, the toys may have lead in the paint, apples might have razorblades, jeeze....what can we give! I had a neighbor who gave out 2-3 pennies to each child until I pointed out that a young child could swallow them!

we've always just given candy. we get so much from the parades over the summer and fall so we usually give it to the kids for trick or treat. that would be neat to give something other than candy but right now we can't afford anything.

I love Halloween. We enjoy seeing the kids dress up and have fun. We give out treat bags filled with candy and some kind of Halloween toy. I feel it's one day a year where to really appreciate kids. I used to love getting homemade traets like the popcorn balls, candied apples, fudge and cookies but unfortunately that can't be done anymore for saftey of the kids(I think it's a shame).

We usually buy little toys from Oriental Trading Co. for Halloween treats. We live on a slow street, not too many kids trick or treat, so I'd rather have the extra toys than the choclate!
I also buy little toys for the kids to pass out for the birthdays at school. I hate making cupcakes and there just isn't any nutritional value in other sweets. Last year, my son's class were talking about kites about the time of his birthday, so I purchased a bunch of "color your own" kite kits for him to pass out. The teacher enjoyed it, because she didn't have to supply the kites for their craft, and the kids got a really neat treat! They still tell me how much they enjoyed that kite!

Hi for halloween I do a mix of both. I get treat bags and put in candy and creepy halloween toys and stickers. I remember as a kid some people gave away toothbrushes and we all thought that was crazy. Halloween is for candy and lots of fun.

Hey I just had a thought. I could give out business cards with a sucker attached to it ha ha. Spread the word. I'm never home for Halloween to give out candy on purpose. I think I got this from my mother because she always leaves the house because she doesn't want to be bothered. In my old neighborhood there weren't many kids trick or treating so the few that did come around we just put up a sign saying we don't have any candy but they still rang the bell anyway.

I alwats hated people who didnt give candy for Haloween. Its just what you do, and my parents wouldnt let me have it if it was fruit or a home-baked item. Afraid of poison or deisease or razors or something. I like to give out the kind of candy I loved when I was a kid- chocolate bars, but not the mini ones. Medium to big ones. Around haloween they come cheap in a big bag, so its doable, and I love seeing the neighberhood kids all dressed up. Costumes are the best part~!
