I have been thinking about the differences in tastes of all horror fans. Some people seem to radiate toward certain subgenres, ie., zombie, slasher, vampire, etc., as opposed to horror in general. Are you more prone to prefer a particular subgenre? If so, which one(s)? For me, I am a general horror lover, and as such, have a very ecclectic taste. Some I enjoy for pure campiness, while others I love for the sheer scare factor. I thought it would be interesting to find out what others like. List your top 10 favorite horror films, with number 1 obviously being your absolute favorite.
Here's my list:
10. The Devil Rides Out
9. The Omen (the original version, naturally)
8. Rosemary's Baby
7. House of 1000 Corpses
6. Hellraiser
5. Night of the Living Dead (in the original black and white)
4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (again, the original)
3. Halloween
2. The Exorcist
1. The Shining

I can't say I could actually rank them. There are soo many to choose from with lots of different things I like. Freddies ability to turn your dreams aginst you, Jasons 1001 uses for farm tools, The tooth fairy from darkness falls their all good in their own way. It'd give me a headace trying to decide.

You made some good points. It really was hard for me to make my short 10 list and I changed it around a few times before posting. I love the story of how Freddy was originally dreamed up in the first place. It was so interesting to learn that he was born from a true news story that Wes Craven read.
Darkness Falls... I watched it once. I couldn't seem to get into it as much as some did. In that film, I was hoping for a real scare-the-heck-out-of-you movie. But in DF's defense, if I go into a movie expecting it to give me a good scare, I'm often disappointed. I don't scare easily, so any movie that can give me that scare gets bonus points. I do have to say that alot of the Japanese horror films will at least make me a little nervous. :)

The only one I can say I hated was Blair Witch Project. The way it was shot was to put the audience in the victims perspective. In the theater the effect was pretty odvious. People were so anxious & nervious it was overwelming. I on the other hand rebelled aginst it. My fangs were out , I wanted to kill those kids myself. Think I ripped a few plugs outa the seat in front of me.
BAD, BAD UATH!

heh.. ah, Blair Witch. That was one movie where people either hated it or loved it, and those who loved it are now ashamed to admit they did. I, myself, didn't particularly care for it. It was a real "experience" at the theater, though. I witnessed the same thing you did, people were screaming (more than usual in a horror movie). I think that in a sense the movie was genius, or perhaps the hype AROUND it was genius. And for those who loved it: I think they did because it played on that one deep-seated primal fear, and that's the fear of the unknown. People were literally freaking out because some (thanks to the hype) truly believed that it was real and because as you said, you are taken on a front seat ride along with the victims. The ending was a disappointment for me. I get the point that they wanted it to be in a sense, a cliff-hanger, but really!

It is really hard to list top 10 ... It is really easy to disappoint me just like you. I don't like blood everywhere ... i really like the climate ... music ...
When everything is slow and when i really don't know what's gonna happen.
The Exorcist is classic for me ... Rosemary's Baby what a pity i was watching it in situation when i wasn't very able to do that ... but still i think our polish director did a good job :)
13 ghosts ... this one was quite good too ...
Elms Street Nightmare ... all parts ...
I have seen quite nice horror about hospital for mental illness ppl... it was about 3rd floor something. This one was really good ... but i don't remember title :/
I have to think about some other :
And btw about those japan productions : heh i am always annoyed because i never recognize actors :

Roman Polanski was bloody brilliant back in the day! Rosemary's Baby I enjoyed because of the tone of the movie. It was scary (for its time), yet it was not totally disturbing. I loved the direction of the film.
The Exorcist has always been a film that wasn't really frightening to me, but it pushed buttons that had not yet been pushed in the horror genre (at the time).
Usually horror film remakes often leave me disappointed, but there were a few that I liked, namely the remake of The Shining. I adore the original, but I liked how the mini-series was done, since it adhered more to the way the book was originally written (more so than the original film, where Stanley Kubrick used his own vision more than Stephen King's). 13 Ghosts was a pretty good remake, but I prefered the original.
