Which are the open source programs you can't do without? You can name software that has Windows versions as well, or you can stick to Linux-only programs.
There are many open source programs I like but it seems that Open Office, GIMP for image processing and NVU for HMTL editing are some of the programs I install on almost every computer I use.

I use Quanta plus instead of NVU. I installed NVU once, but then I had to switch back to Quanta plus, which I really like.
Thunderbird is a also a must. I use Gaim instead of messenger and Firefox of course.
As for playing videos, I use vlc at first, and kaffeine once in a while. Openoffice's spreadsheet application and Latex to write my documents.

Is Quanta a WYSIWIG editor? If it is, I might give it a try. One of the things I like about NVU is that it is WYSIWIG, which certainly makes editing long pages easier.
There were times when I used Miranda on Windows instead of icq but now I use Qip, which is free but not open source.

Quanta offers some WYSIWYG features, though not as many as NVU. It offers ways to insert tables, images, format text...I prefer to type in the HTML tags, so that is why I like it. It also offers auto completion for HTML tags, CSS selectors, PHP code...
Another nice feature is that is offers syntax highlighting for many programming and scripting languages, which makes it an all-in-one IDE. Most of the time, I have at least 5 tabs open, one with HTML, another one with PHP code, a third one with Javascript...with the syntax of all these languages properly highlighted.

Hi leonarda,
The open source softwares that I use,
In MS platform :
Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, OpenOffice, Vim, VLC Media Player, PuTTY, XMing, GIMP, FileZilla, RSS Owl, WinHTTrack, sometimes Nvu, and many others, which I use once in a while.
In GNU/Linux and Unix:
There are way too many to name here, because I use a large variety of distributions and use too many tools. So, I am not naming any here.
