I don't understand why people call this sort of thing "work"

I've read through a lot of discussions since I joined MyLot, and I am confused every time I read something like, "I have been working online for hours and I made 53 cents today". Working? The term just throws me for a loop when I know that I could spend an hour picking up returnable pop bottles along the roadside and make more than people make in a 24 hour period doing things like this.
I realize everyone has their reason for continuing, a bond with friends, networking, entertainment, some fun contests, a chance to learn things and meet interesting new friends...but "work"? Do people really think they are making money at things like this when in actuality the kilowatts used to generate the electricity to even "be here" probably costs more than 50 cents a day?
I'm sorry, I just don't get it. My definition of "work" is very different I guess. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I must agree with you, I don't consider this to be work, just a little fun time on the computer. But I can also understand why people refer to this as work, because they are busy with it and earn money. If you look at it that way it could be considered work

I fully agree with you. This cannot be classified as work. This is for entertainment, sharing knowledge and probably some social networking.
I am here in myLot for close to a year. I read lot of discussions here, even though I do not respond to each and every one. I have accumulated just about $7 so far, which is a very, very small fraction of my regular one-hour earnings through full-time work. So, I do not stay here/ return here for just that $. Its more to it.
Hope every one understands this. Then we will have more fruitful discussions here. Thanks.

I agree, there is MUCH more to remaining a member of MyLot and I find it very enjoyable. :)
Wow, $7 in a year? Did I read that right? I am close to my second payout just for fiddling around here...about $18 total - and like someone said so cleverly above, I also probably spent it on stuff I don't really need. ;)
Thank you for your comments.

Yes, I think if people are approaching this as "work" then it should be falling into the category of a "chore"...sort of like housework that needs to be done but that you don't get compensated for in terms of earning something for it.
Thank you for your reply. ;)

I would hate to make my living "working" for mere pennies..this is just a good place to hang out..find out new things and maybe even find a real job online that pays pretty well..it is fun..

I agree with you. There are basically four "categories" of things a person can do to earn a living online from home and within each of them are hundreds of options:
1: Work for a company that hires people from home as a Coder, Call Processing Agent, Tutor, etc. List of legit companies here http://designinglife.proboards77.com/index.cgi?board=wahemployment
2: Develop a business of their own and market their own products or services to a pre-defined niche. This could include eBay selling, freelance writing, web design for a fee, and the list here is only limited by imagination, skill, and determination.
3: Engage in Internet marketing and make money by promoting and referring their audiences to "other people's" products and services. Some of the GPT stuff falls into this category.
4: Join an existing Network Marketing, or MLM-type business.
:) Thank you for your response.

definition of work varies from person to person.i think that to sit here to do a task that earns you money is supposed to be called work.not only do i enjoy doing the "work" i have lots of fun too.
but you have made a good point about the money required to be on the computer.so may we'll call it entertainment/work.

I would have to say its alittle bit of having fun and alittle bit of work! But most of the time Im having a blast on mylot. I always want to see how my great friends are doing here on mylot. I guess I would call it work if Im trying to make alot of discussions in short period of time. But I have to admit I dont do that anymore. Happy posting on mylot its a great site.

I believe that a number of people from other countries do use this and other sites like it for income and not just spare change. The people who post 100 discussions per day and never respond to the replies because they don't have time. 25 bucks a month is good money for them. For them, this is a job. And a lot of them cheat in order to make a few extra cents because those few extra cents can pay for food for their families.

Hmmm? I guess I would need to hear from people in other countries to know whether this is factual for them.
For one thing, it doesn't make sense to me that if $25 a month is going to feed someone's family, why would they be spending the $25 (they must already have?) to be able to have Internet service in the first place?
Thank you for your reply. :)

I do find it a bit ironic that this would be considered work as in "to earn a living". I couldn't possibly type fast enought to earn a living here if I could even come up with enough subjects to talk about and enough discussions to answer. To earn a living I would have to make a minimum of $30 a day and I would call that a virtual impossibility on here.
I stay to learn, talk and perhaps make a few online friends to connect with. The few cents I make here is a small bonus.

I agree with both you and genuinespeak (above response) and have given you pluses.
When I am taking a break from the things I do to support my family working from home, I go to message boards for entertainment and to unwind a bit. I have found MyLot to be full of many very interesting people that I enjoy meeting and conversing with.
I figure, that as long as I am going to be posting and interacting anyway...then I might as well get a little something here and there for doing it. ;)

I do consider posting on this sort of site to be a form of work, in that I am expending energy to do this, but I don't consider it work in terms of payment for services rendered or anything. It's a way to pick up some extra spending cash, which I will probably end up using to buy more stuff I probably didn't need anyway. :) But somehow, when it's money that I've earned online, it seems more ephemeral to me, and I don't feel so bad spending it. It's not the money from my day job, which does useful things like pay the rent. Money from my online "jobs" is my fun money! :)

Hi, u choose very intresting topic, Well i do agree with u, and i am sure very few might have earn ANYTHING from here, as the a mount of posting required to earn anything is Enormous. Well i think i am here since 6-7 days and i have earn US$0.36/ WOW. i dont know if i am going to get it or not, LOL. Well, what i can say it that its good sight to know other peoples, have friends, know their idea, some discussion are really intresting and u can see how people from differnt countries react on them as definetly they have differnt cultures, relegions, political back ground. So i would say that its more for entertainment and knowledge then for financial benefit.

Yes! i don't think you can class anything like this work. Work to me, is going out and actualyl earning a living, or on the other hand, looking after the household and children (stay at home mothers or fathers). There's no way you could earn a living on this site. No matter how much you post!
Even though i sit here reading discussions and replying. I do it more for the fun of interacting with other people than the money, the money, however little it is, is just a small bonus for me. I worked out i make 20c a day. No way is that an earning. haha.

I think that's an activity that could be considered work but not the kind of work that could generate a sufficient amount to sustain a good lifestyle. Any activity is work for we do a lot of things working but it does not always result to having money remuneration like working in the house doing household chores.

I think you said it all when you said "my definition of work is very different". Everyone looks at things differently. I'm on the internet quite a bit during the day anyways for amusement so why not do something thats going to pay me for something I like to do. Some ppl, for different reasons, aren't able to work outside the home so this is a way to make a little extra money for odds and ends. I don't look at it as a 9 to 5 job but I do like to "work" at reaching my payout. Each person goes at their own pace but I can respond to 100 discussions in just about an hour. That means that for 3 hours I can either play a game online or come here and have some fun and make $3.00. I might as well have fun here and make the coin :) It's really just a personal outlook and alot of things factor into whether a person likes it here or not.

It feels like work to me since I have to think about what to discuss then put it into words that people will understand and make it interesting enough to get responses I need to earn money here. Plus the fact that I know I have to dedicate my time to doing all of that. It's definitely work to me. Everything I write is going to earn money for me so I consider that work.
