DESTINY, What's your idea about it

I ones missed something that i badly needed and a friend told me i should forget it that i was not destined to have it. But somebody elsen tried to convince me Biblically that there is nothing like destiny and that i should continue. Please do you believe whatever happens to somebody is destined to happen to him/her?
