The Dollar Devalued?

I heard on the radio a little while ago that the dollar is roughly worth about one cent. I would like to know how our country can continue giving away money hand over fist when our situation is so precarious. They try to keep these things from us, but they invariably will leak out.

The dollar is worth considerably more than 1 cent. It's actually worth one dollar. :) The dollar is devalued in relation to many other countries currencies. Which is largely due to mismanagement at the Presidential and Federal level. The FED it supposed to keep the economy strong. Sometimes that means raising or lowering interest rates, or printing more money as we need it, which tends to devalue it since our dollar is not really based on anything; it was taken off the gold standard alone. Hopefully with some better financial leadership from the government (to be read new president) things will rebound soon. Bud Greenspan who ran the Fed recently stepped down. Mr. Greenspan was awesome at his job, hopefully Ben Vernacki-- his replacement, will get his act together soon. He's been makeing the problem much worse by so indifferent and not being a leader.

I understand all of that, filmbuff, but I don't see how we'll ever recover with our President giving money away by the millions every time it suits his fancy. We'll be bankrupt before he leaves office.

Oneandonemakessix is right. All Presidents give away foreign aid like mad. There are a quite a few other issues making our economy weak, even though the current administrations claims it is strong. The weakening housing market and lack of fiscal responsibility are huge factors in this problem. All the money going to the war machine in iraq and private companies is making them rich, but hurting our overall economy because we can't take care of ourselves. Jobs going away, lack of health insurance and lack of consumer confidence isn't making matters any better either, and don't forget about the huge price of oil and gas. Since Katrina was brought up, it really, really bothers me that the government refused so much foreign aid, both domestic and from abroad. Walmart trucks filled with food, water and clothing were ordered to turn around. Mexico sent in bottled water and it was refused. It's pretty bad when Mexico gives us water...what does it say if we won't take it...

It's depressing how much our currency has devalued compared to the pound, the Euro, the candadian dollar, etc. over the past few months. It seems like every time I check the exchange rates the American dollar gets weaker and weaker. It makes me a little nervous as well, because it will be much more expensive for me to travel overseas because "my money" will be worth less and less, unless our economy can get out of the slump that we are currently stuck in.
