To build muscle, you need protein foods. Of course, if you are naturally slim in build, you will only be able to build so much muscle. We have to deal with our genetic structure. Starches will only put fat on you, which I'm sure you don't want. Stick to a diet of protein foods mostly (fish, chicken or soy products like tofu, if you like) and exercise on a regular basis, doing some sort of weight training. Eat a lot of vegetables with your protein foods and avoid starches as much as possible. If you want to just use protein supplements, I would advise getting one that is pure soy protein. You won't have to deal with the possibly bad side effects of eating too much meat and will still get a lot of protein in your diet.

High Protein and High Carbohydrate foods, such as eggs, meat, breads, pasta and rice will all help you put on weight, and coupled with regular exercise and workout will build your body and muscles.
I was in a similar situation, wanting to 'beef up' a little, so to speak.
What worked for me was things such as scrambled eggs for breakfast, salad sandwiches with ham or chicken for lunch, and pastas (with chicken and many vegetables) or mashed potato and meat for dinner.
I go for walks and jogs daily and I am now at a much more suitable weight that I am very pleased with =D
Good luck!
