Will graphic images stop you smoking?

Is it right to put images of diseased lungs on cigarette packets? Images highlighting the dangers of smoking, including ones of damaged lungs, will accompany text warnings on all tobacco products in the UK by the end of 2009. Anti-smoking campaigners welcomed the move but smokers' lobby group Forest said they were being "victimised". Professor Robert West of Cancer Research UK estimated around 2,500 lives a year could be saved. Is the state going too far with these images? Are smokers being "victimised"? Or, are you a smoker trying to kick the habit? If so, what is your excuse for not giving up?

To be honest they could hand me a pair of diseased lungs and it wouldn't stop me smoking. I admit that I smoke purely out of habit these days but I don't see anything wrong with my smoking. I don't smoke near my kids, I welcomed the smoking ban and all in all am quite willing to step away from non-smokers because they don't need to share my habits. The Government hasn't realised yet that there are tons of people out there just like me who really don't care one way or the other because we're going to do what we like anyway. As for the reason I haven't quit yet? I haven't got one, I know I probably should and I know all about the dangers inherent in smoking but to be honest, i really can't be bothered with quitting right now. I'm too busy sorting out my university course and dealing with everything else that if i stopped, the cravings would drive me insane (yes I have tried to quit before and in the end the hubby and my mum threw cigs at me to shut me up again even though I was on patches). When Uni is over, I'll probably try again but until then, meh :P

Okay so now smokers would be subject to 'visual mental-conditioning' swaying their decision to even light up which gives our government another edge on controlling the people by taking their slightest forms of indulgence away from them. sharing the light, Erica, the Enlightenment Advisor, M.A. Transpersonal Psychology Studies Counseling, Author/ Artist/ Photographer & Freelancer http://www.enlightenment-psych.net/ericasprofile.htm

I think it is a good idea if they do put images myself. I just had a family member die of both lung and throat cancer from smoking. I was a smoker but I quit. It was to sad watching someone go through this.

I had to give up smoking because of medical reasons.... we here in Australia have had this type of campaign for years with the "crook pictures and warning words" No ... for a seasoned smoker it makes NO DIFFERENCE at all because we tend not to look at the pics or buy "plain packets" Yes the smoker is being vitomised about this ..... if the govts were so incenced about smoking they would ban it ..... but they won't because they make to much money in excise and taxes ........ or am I being to cynicle
