I have a bag of pretzel rods that has gone stale. I hate to throw them out because it sems like such a waste. My boyfriend suggested we crush them up into breadcrumbs and use then to make something....but what? Had anyone ever done anything like this? Do you have a recipe you could share? Or, am I just being crazy and I should just chuck them and buy some fresh pretzles.

If you don't want to use them for cooking. You could break the pretzles up and feed the birds outside. I feed the birds a lot of bread products.

Thanks Irish. I live in the city and the only birds near me are pidgeons. I don't want to encourage them coming to my little balcony becuase then they leave behind um....presents that I have to clean up!

I hear ya. We live in the city as well and have pidgeons, but it is odd I put out bread and what not, and they don't come and eat it, just the other birds do.

I've actually used crushed pretzle crumbs to bread chicken before and it was really yummy. I just dipped the chicken in milk then rolled it in the pretzles and then baked it. My family loved it.

I bet those would be good on this recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_28749,00.html It is essentially baked chicken finger, but the recipe is really good and quick. I make this all the time with my son. We pair it with a salad and steamed veggies.

I wouldn't throw them out, either. Sometimes you can save stale chips by putting them in a warm oven for a few minutes, you might want to try that. Otherwise, crush the pretzels and use them to top casseroles or coat meat for frying. If you can't use the crumbs up very fast, they should freeze fine.

Oh yeah, freezing them in a great idea too!

Though I don't know what this pretzel rod is, I want to make a suggestion-because I can gather they resemble bread crumbs. First of all make sure that there is no fungus in this. Even if there is fungus at one tail end, throw the whole thing out. I am sure you are aware that fungus cannot be flushed out of the system. Do not use it.On the othere hand it is just hard and has not had aany growth in it, then you can use it as a coating for cutlets.
