On August 24th, a 2 year old child was left in a hot SUV for eight hours, and died due to heatstroke. The mother is an assistant principal at a middle school in Batavia Oh. She is reported to say she left the child in there sleep that morning, and forgot to retrieve the child while preparing the school, along with other staff, for the first day of school. (For the full story go to http://www.wlwt.com/news/13960368/detail.html )
I do not see how a mother could forget her child for over eight hours, no matter what she is doing. It had been hot in our area (Southern Ohio) for about the past two weeks. We had had heat indices of about 105F during that time. And because the child was sleep, she left her in the car while she took care of business in the school.
Not only this, but later in the week it came out that she had gotten donuts for the staff at a local doughnut shop before arriving at the school. She had three boxes of them, and sat them either next to the child or in the back of the SUV, either way, it was determined that she made one trip back to the SUV in order to retrieve all three boxes of doughnuts.
I urge you all to continue reading with this story until today's report when you click on the link. I am simply outraged at our judicial system. Because after investigation it has been determined that she will not be charged for neglect. I am sorry but eight hours you didn't think she would get up? Want something to eat? Have to pee? The psychologists say basically that she just forgot. How do you get away with forgetting that your child is in a hot a$$ car?!? Please tell me I am not alone in this MyLot, what do you think?

How can they not see that as neglect? If some one left a dog in a car for 8 hours you can bet they wouldn't get off scott free. Why less consequences when a child is involved?

My point exactly, how can you view this situation and not charge the mother with anything? I would, at the extreme least, make her undergo some serious psychological counseling, possibly inpatient, until I was satisfied there was nothing wrong with her, and then she could return to her kids.

I think that I'm more than a little sick right now...
this is the CSI story brought to real life, and its
hard for me to rationalize the entire situation.
I don't think a mother would be able to live with
herself after something that horrendous...

I can't imagine this. There once was a case a few years ago where a father forgot his baby in the car - he forgot to drop the sleeping child off to daycare. It was awful. Just horrible. How do you forget about your child?
And while I can see forgetting momentarily about a sleeping child, this woman actually went back to her car?
Last year, I drove around with my baby cousin in the car. I actually ended up making 3 trips to and from the car because I kept him with me every single second. (What if someone stole the car, complete with child?)
Regardless, yes, awful things happen. But when you do awful things, nobody should wander around calling you mother-of-the-year.

OMG! How could someone forget a child for that long a time? I couldn't forget mine for even a few minutes, ket alone 8 dam* hours. I was checking probably more than I needed to and that was in the house and I am the way with my grandkids and great-grandkids. They get time for that in Kansas.

I thought they get time for that in Ohio too. But obviously this mother found some loophole that precludes her from that.

I dont even know what to say. Poor little baby!! What a horrible thing. I cant imagine forgeting my child. Why wasnt the child at a sitters since the mom had to work? She was around kids all day and didnt remember her own?? I feel she should be charged!! She left her child in a car and didnt check for 8 hours! Common sence would tell you it gets hot in a car! I hope she feels so bad about it and cant sleep or eat! She should be in jail for neglect!!

The mother stated that she was not used to taking her daughter to daycare. She was supposed to drop her off that morning, but forgot that too.

That is very sad.I canot beleive that she got away with it just being she forgot. How can you forget a child?I know I can be absent minded and mothers can get that way but I have never gorgot my child in the car.Plus when people leave their kids out in the car even for a minute someone can just abduct them. And parents wonder why thier kids get kidnapped.I am not saying all kids get kidnapped because of that reason some parents might actually have a child abducted from home or schol, ect but to leave a child int he car is just asking for it.My husband called 911 when he went to go into sheetz and came back I told him their was a kid in the car around 2 years old and he was in thier with the windows rolled down no one in the car with himMy husband called 911 and told them but by the time he almost got off the phone with them he told them the guy(which looked like the kids grandpa)came out and was geting in.I see so many cases as well as animals dying which is sad because they are left in a car .People say oh I was only going to be gone for a minute.ALot can happen in a minute or 5 minutes, ect.ANd to think the lady is principle of a school.Even scarier.

Sad but true. Children's Services get called many a time, some for real allegations, some for just angry folks that don't like a certain parent. It seems sometimes that the ones whose allegations are false, get watched closer, and sometimes get into trouble for what could have been a misunderstanding because Children's services is watching them, while other parents who are definately abusing their kids get away scot free.
