What Were the Toys that You Play with When You were a Kid?

For those stuff that I played with when I was kid, I don't think I really see them anywhere now. I used to play "paper dolls", they were basically paper drawings and I could change the paper dolls' dresses and stuff. I remember my mom bought me a whole bag of them because they were cheap at that time. I kind of miss them somehow and it's such a regret that I haven't kept them. What about you?

I had the paper dolls that you spoke about, and I was always a creative child, so I was more about making my own toys out of spare material, textas, paper, cardboard and corks or something like that, as well as the plush/stuffed toys that I had as well.
My favourite toy of all time (and at one point my 'best friend') was my small toy chimpanzee who I named 'Cheetah'. I took her everywhere with me, and my nan even made some matching outfits for us, and a school uniform for Cheetah when I took her to school =P
I also had some painted wooden blocks (a circle, square, triangle and so on) and a board with the shapes cut out of it, which I enjoyed playing with until I was almost 10 years old. =]
I still have most of my childhood toys, and Cheetah still belongs on the main pillow on my bed =D

Oh really nice! You are very creative! I wasn't really creative except making outfits for barbie and cutting her hair off *laughs*.

I think making your own stuff is so cool! I wish I had done that as a kid. Maybe I would have more eye-to-hand coordination. But now I make all kinds of stuff from recycled materials.
Never had a toy chimp or any monkeys. Sounds neat.

LOL, as a matter of fact, my hand-eye co-ordination is absolutely shot!
I'm getting more coordinated as I get older, which I find kind of odd.
I used to cut off the hair of my dolls, too.
And make them outfits (I used to knit bags to carry them around in, after my grandma taught me how to knit)
=D

We used to play outdoor games when I was kid such as hide and seek and patintero..so we don't have much toys. However, I remember playing with claypots, small kitchen stuff, and I have a small wash basin mom nought me, I can never forget that because I liked that very much.

Barbie dolls, action figures, Lite Brite, Pound Puppies, Nintendo...you name it. My brother and I had more toys and more collectibles than we knew what to do with.

I have two barbie dolls from my uncle, one of them is the ballerina barbie and it is really pretty. I also used to play paper dolls, my mother just bought me one (it is also a barbie paper doll) and then my brother made another paper doll for me, he is really good at drawing.

Hello wondericequeen,
Oh, you make me remember the old times! I loved to play paper dolls too as I like to see the different colors and dresses that we can put on them. I remember sometimes, I will make it on my own and created my own designs for the dresses.

Very creative! I didn't make the dresses for the paper dolls but I would draw them on a paper and tried to draw really good! Then I would ask mom if they looked similar, I think my mom was really annoyed by me *laughs*.

Hello wondericequeen,
I love to design a wedding dress for my paper doll. But mind you...instead of white, I used bright colors for that purpose. It looks odd but I just love it. I think my creation was the greatest that time and I would end up as a fashion designer when I grow up *laughs* Uhmm... nothing close to that though...

I used to play with paper dolls too. We could buy them in the coloring book section of the stores. You could punch them out and they came with several sets of clothes. Barbie paper dolls were my favorites.
I also had lots of Barbie dolls. I had the Barbie Townhouse and Convertible. I had something like 45 Barbies. I kept their original clothes and had several of those suitcase things that you could put 3 Barbies in with all their clothes. I also had several Ken dolls and a few Skipper dolls. I wish I had kept them, but as I out grew them I gave them to my little sister and then she gave them away as she out grew them.

Back in the earl 70s I used to play with plastic toy soldiers called Timpo Toys. These little figurines were quiet detailed. had interchangeable bits and sell on eBay for good money these days. I found them all at my parents place, brought them home and my daughter discovered them all and broke some of teh very rare pieces - that's life I guess

I remember paper dolls, but my favorite toys were the bow and arrow "weapons" we used to make every spring for target practice. I confess that I did try to shoot down a few birds with them, once in a while, but only when I was still too little to hit much of anything. By the time I was 8 or 9, the birds were my friends and I had no interest in hurting them. We had natural clay in the creek bank, too, and I used to play "sculptor" all day long.

I am so jealous of kids today and the cool toys they have now! I remember paper dolls, they were so cute. I played with Barbies a lot, I had the dream house and all of the Barbie stuff. I miss Barbies!

Barbies? My family couldn't afford barbies when I was a kid. I had a cheap barbie (haha) and I would made clothes for her using some fabric. Then I thought she looked better with short hair and I cut all her hair off *laughs*. I was very crazy with barbies.

My favorite was a toy baby I called "Kalbo," which means bald in my language. It cried when you removed the pacifier. Everything else that I had were for boys: robots, legos, and toy airplanes, and I didn't like them. I think I spent most of my time reading fairy tales and working on coloring books.

Right coloring books too! I had them! And I tried to really color them nicely! Too bad that I don't have them anymore, it would be a good collection!

I also used to play paper dolls when I was a kid. We never bought it. My elder sister is so good in drawing and she used to make one for me including the wardrobe of my doll.
I have a funny memory of playing with paper dolls. I remember one day while I'm playing my paper doll I drop her unintentionally and so she get dirty. So what I thought is that I need to clean her and get her dressed and so I went to the bathroom and get her into shower without realizing that it's a paper doll and once she get wet I will totally ruin it. So, to make the story short, I really did ruined her and so I cried hard. My sister laugh at me but promise me to do another one. Everytime I remember that, I cant help but to laugh. LOL!

We loved paper dolls when I was a kid, and spent hours with them. Our favorite was 12 Cousins, a collection of 12 child dolls whose names began with the first 12 letters of the alphabet. Another great one was the Flintstones paper dolls. We used to make caves for them to live in, and pretend we all lived in the stone age. Does anyone else remember these? When my kids were little, paper dolls had almost disappeared but there were still a few. The favorite was Minnie Mouse, because she had such wonderfully colorful costumes.

I think the two things I played with the most were my Barbies (all the dolls I had and clothes and furiture I had too) & my legos. I loved playing with both of those a lot and usually that is what you could find me doing along with reading as well.

Right, barbies are classic! I had one but I cut her hair and made clothes for her on my own (because I couldn't afford buying clothes for her). I had fun too!

Back then we feel contented to the toys that we mostly likely see or can make up to, from our surroundings, Like if we have a bundle of sticks, then we can enjoy playing pick-up sticks. A simple ball, that we play at and a yard stick that we use as a bat and start playing baseball.
I think that the joys we have back then is simple, not like today that most of the toys are complicated and sometimes expensive to play at!;)

Yes I agree! I think the simple joy is really beautiful! When I see the toys today I kind of feel that they are lacking a certain kind of beauty somewhere.

paper dolls are popular when I was a kid. I used to make them in cardboards for myself and for my sister and cousins and then we'd make our own style of dresses in white papers and then color some of them. we also give name to our paper dolls and I remember I always use Lenny. haha.. I can't exactly remember the reason behind it but I think its based on some character from tv. ^__^;; commercial paper dolls haven't reached our local small stores then and not until I was in highschool that it started to be seen in our neighborhood. but back then I was satisfied with my own paper dolls.
and then I also had hoolahoops, text cards LOL, jumping rope, and some rubber bands. LOL

When I was young, we used to play with paper dolls also, but we don't buy them. We make them ourselves. We use cardboard and cut them. We also use art paper and magazines to make paper dresses. Sometimes we just cut out the model from the magazine to make it look realistic and then paste them in cardboard to harden them. Then we design dresses made of paper and cloth.
It's nice to remember those times. Thank you for you post. I was able to relate so much.

Kids have too many toys to choose from these days, they have no sentimental value anymore and there is too much plastic crap in the shops. And kids movies today are popular 1 day and gone the next. I remember when i was a kid, a movie would come out and it was popular for a whole year! Too many toys, too many movies and too much consuming.

Right I totally agree! I don't remember me going to a toy store when I was a kid! I just played what mom and dad gave me!
