I just want to know if people agree that only the age should be a factor when hiring employees. I've been having a problem going back to work beacause employers think I'm too old (I'm in my mid-30's). Although I pass the exam and their interview i'm told that they prefer younger ones. Is is because they're cheaper to hire and easier to control? When I was just starting out I usually encounter employers who tell you they need someone experienced. Now that i'm experienced i'm told they want somebody young. Is this fair or what? What do you think?

I think age is a very important factor, but different jobs have different requirements, some jobs that require young people, some of the needs of older people, perhaps they think age to your personal experience and ability.

You are right about age being a factor but not the only one. Like you, when I was younger, employers wanted someone with experience. It's very hard to get the experience if no one takes a chance and gives you the training needed to do the job. Once you start getting the experience, and the years go by, employers will tend to say you're over qualified. It may not just be your age but a fear that you will want too much pay based on your skill level, which may or may not be the case.
My last position did give me some insight into the problem as most of the employees in our office were younger than me. Once you know more than your bosses, they're sometimes afraid you'll be going after their job. :P
