Hello! Recently I made a new friend who lives in a joint family. There are 20-25 members in his family who live in one house. I was really surprised because I have never heard about such a big family. Do you know about any such a big family? What do you think about 20-25 people living in a house? I just can't imagine. Vani^_^

It is possible in a joint family, where the parents have 5-6 boys and 3-4 girls. Girls get married and go to their husbands place. Boys when they get married, and each have 2 or 3 children. With grand parents, it makes around 25+. I know a family which has 41 members in the house, owns a huge property, 4 people cook food everyday for them, all male members go for a job, they have cowshed which has 4-6 cows, the milk sufficient enough to meet the day to day requirement of the family. Everyone pools their income (fixed amount) towards the household expenses. It is a factory, activities going on 24/7.

Thanks for responding! I never heard about 20-25 members of a family living together, so I would have never heard about 41 members too. But 41 members in a family is quite big.

There is a Hindu Joint Family in Karnataka ( a feature article appeared in one of our weekly magazine with photographs and statistics) there are more than 75 members in the family, all living peacefully, most engaged in agriculture though they are highly educated, and could easily find jobs in the city, they hang to family because of close bondage with family members. Imagine, any small functions like birthday will have presence of 100 members without invitation!!

Yes,I have seen this many of times. But they dont live there very long they all pack up an move together somewere else after 6 months.I think its because they are not legal to live here. When you see these people grocery shopping they have 2 van loads of food.Me myself I would go nuts liveing with that many people.I guess they just look out for one another an save money at the same time.

Actually I've heard and seen the actual family living together in one house. This thing happens in my own country. At first I didn't believe it but when I saw it with my own eyes, only then I started to believe. Actually living together in a big family has many advantages. The advantages are we do not have to be responsible solely for what we bring home for the family. What I mean is we are not the only bread winner in the family so the burden can be shared with many others in the large family. I have an Indian friend whom I met while I was hospitalized three years ago. She went to the hospital due to miscarriage. I was admitted first, so I was already sitting on my bed when she came. She came in with three adult men. She was crying because she was scared to do the process of D&C. She thought it was very painful and the doctors do it without giving anesthetics. I came to her and consoled her not to worry. I thought it was funny because usually a woman who miscarried will be accompanied by her husband, their kids if any, and sometimes the parents in-law. But actually the three men are her husband, her brother and her brother in-law. All the three men acted like they are the head of the family, and are responsible if anything happened to her. The three of them even made a meeting while she sat on the bed, crying. When I asked her who are they, she told me and she said she is living in a large house with 51 other family members. I said wow! She said her job in the house is only to cheer people up by talking to them. All other chores in the house has been taken, and being a junior that was the only left chore left in the house. I thought this is cool! Lol! There are some other odd jobs in the house. One girl has to do only sweeping, the other has to do only dish washing, the other one has to do only laundry, etc. She also told me that the most powerful person in the house is his own father. Her grandfather still lives with them, but he doesn't have the power because he is not the biggest bread winner in the family. Whatever her father says must be respected by everybody in the family. I think it is fun if I can experience living in a big family. There must be problems too, I don't deny it, but I bet there must be so much excitement as well!

HI INDIAVANI, it is possible, my mothers mother (my Nani)has four brothers , and all together their are 18 childrens in their family and total nos of persons exceeds to 24 nos. they all stay in village as joint family, their houses are in one row with common wall , they have around 100 acres of land, their main occupation is farming, only three person are suppling milk to town rest of them work in farms. but now their sons have only one or two childrens . it is belived in old times that more peples u have in family, u will be more power full and earn more as u will not depend on others.

Hello indiavani, No I haven't heard about 20-25 members in a family living in onr roof. I see familys of that size living in seperate houses close to each other. I think that would be a hard thing for a family specially if its a small house. I wonder how they sleep. I can't imagine it too. :-)
