Most times summers in the south are unbearable, so we end up running our window air conditioners night and day. Recently, two of our air conditioners have started acting funny and freezing up. And, I was wondering if it could have anything to do with the AC filter.
I've also noticed that sometimes it's hard to breathe indoors and I'm worried that the filters could be to blame. But, I don't want to clean them too often and mess them up. Any suggestions? How often should you clean the filter for a window air conditioner? Will cleaning the filter mess up an air conditioner?

I think I am lazy, so I don't often clean the air conditioner filter. When it is dirty, then the air conditioner will give me a signal and show the red light. When I see it, I know it's time for me to clean the filter. Last time I cleaned it was about a few weeks ago.

I am not a an aircon technician but we usually cleaan the filter at least every 3 months. Thats helping clean the air we are also getting from it. I suggesst that at least you must put off one of the aircon after 8 hour use and vice versa with the others. If you still felt hardness breathing indoor I suggest that you call on your seller if it is under warranty and/or call a technician if there is a need to.

I think if you DON'T clean the air filter it will mess up your air conditioner. I live in an apartment, and the maintenance man cleans or changes all of our filters every other month. I've been in houses that didn't clean the filters, and the air is very heavy.

If you don't clean the filter or get new filter then you are asking for problems with your A/C. We also live in the south part of Texas and have central heat and air but mostly use the air. We change our filter at least once a month, it depends on what type of filter you have whether or not you can clean them or need to replace. It does help that our son is int he A/C business to keep ours running in good condition.
It will never harm your A/C to clean the filter even if it is too often. If you have the type of filter that you can wash and reuse for a certain amount of times remember not to put it back in until it is completely dry.
I hope this helps some.
