Does anyone know if its any good to homeschool your kids? What is the best curriculum to use? Please give some relevant feedback on your experiences! We would like to consider it in America, but would like to make an educated decision. Thanks!

I think that it depends on tha family involved. My husband and I thought about it, before we found out that our son was special needs. We decided not to homeschool so that our son could be in a public setting and be around other kids and have a set schedule. Also, home is home. It's a sacuary. Yeah, he might have homework, but this I am his mom, I don't have to double as his teacher and principal, as well. Some children don't respond well to their parents, they don't want to sit and work, or do what they're told, so I think they'd be better off going to school where an authority figure can be introduced and they can be taught. That being said, I go to my son's open house. I am in constant contact with my son's teacher. I know what they are doing and when. If there is a conference, I go. I am on top of everything that happens at that school and they all know it. They know I am a stay at home mom, I am less than 5 minutes away and might get a wild hair to come eat lunch with my son at any time. That's my right and my perrogitive. I can do this, and I will, and I won't warn them first. My brother had an abusive teacher growing up and we never knew about it until years later and it really scarred him. I refuse to let that happen. If anything happens that I don't like I am very vocal about it. If it isn't handled by the teacher to my satisfaction, I am no problems going above her head until it is handled. I keep climbing the ladder, throwing a hissy fit as I go, until I get my way. So far I have only had two major issues, and they were a couple of years ago. One was with another student hurting my son and another was with a bus problem. I got both taken care of with some phone calls. I have no problem calling whoever I have to to make sure my son gets the best care possible and they know it. I think it really depends on the parent and children involved. Can you make a schedule and stick to it? Can your children make you bend with a little begging or will you stand your ground if they want to play and it's time to work? I know I tend to cave, which is one reason I scrapped homeschooling. I don't want to have to where more "hats" than I already do. I am already mommy and sometimes have to be daddy, too (since he's in the Navy and often has to leave for weeks or months at a time). I didn't want to have to add teacher and principal to that, as well. It was a personal choice.

I'm going to be homeschooling my oldest son who is in first grade. I will only be doing it this year. Due to unforseen circumstances I have to this year but I will be going back to school once we move from here.

Hi creditmaxed,I would definatly homeschool,in my youth, the schools actually taught subjects truthfully and interesting subjects, today, they do not,I have a grade 10 education myself, and can actually do math and know far more history and geograpfy than university grades do today. I would however,do so in a way that would allow much time to be spent with others of the childs age after school, and at the parks for sports.

Hi creditmaxed, Unless I had no other choice, I would never homeschool kids. They miss out on too much. I would like to see a better school system, but homeschool is not the answer.
