Old Home Remedies

I remember when I was a child everyone had several home remedies that were used to cure minor health problems. Back in those days, people didn't run to the doctor every time they got a sniffle or any little minor injury. In some of these remedies there was a little alcohol content. They were used to treat colds, flu, cramps, and many other things. I was just thinking that, according to today's standards, this would have been breaking the law. I do know this; those old remedies helped me out many times, and I am alright. I guess what I am trying to say is that sometimes the old ways are really the best ways. Kids didn't stay sick all the time because parents were forearmed with the stuff that could ward off many illnesses.

I'm from an Asian background so boy do i know what "old home remedies" can stretch to. I think that for minor problems, the human body is so fantastic that over time, it'll "cure" itself. Of course the placebo effect could come into play and psychologically it helps to think you've done something and now you're going to feel better. I think in general too, people used to be tougher, more physcially active and less inclined to shop the medicine asle to "see what's out there"

Those are all good points, reveria, and I do believe that you are half way to a cure if you believe.

You're so right! I even remember when you could get cough syrup with codeine over the counter! That was probably 45-50 years ago but I remember it, and it really worked. Parents knew enough not to over-do it because I didn't ever hear of any little kids getting addicted. One big problem these days, although some doctors are getting away from it, is antibiotics are being give too often so now too many germs are becoming resistant to them. Colds need to run their course so running to the doctor isn't going to relieve anything except your wallet from your money! Also, I understand there are more allergies today because of all the processed foods we eat and other environmental issues. I still use alot of the "old-time" remedies when I can. I believe too much medicine and too many doctors is hazardous to your health! Annie

I totally agree with you. A couple of years ago my daughter had a cold and I took her to the doctor and got antibiotics. However, after 2 10 day supplies of them, she was still sick. I told him that I was not giving her more and that I would take her home and put Vicks Vapor rub on her chest and a white shirt and let her sleep with it on and she would get rid of the congestion. They said that was bad for kids.. Well, I can't tell you how many nights I slept that way and I turned out fine. They just want our money!!

Right on both counts, anniepa. I think that in time people are going to return more and more to some of the old ways. People often forget that doctors are in business to make lots of money. They are not in a hurry to cure you of what ails you.

When I was young, getting sick was rare. I remember I would feel yucky, throw up and Mum would keep me home from school with orders to stay in bed. It was very boring but I did as I was told for the most part. The thing is, once I'd thrown up I would start to feel better, as if whatever was bothering my system was now gone. If we had a cold or a sniffle even we would be given vitamin C, supplied in a huge bottle by my aunt who was a nursing sister and could get hold of things like this with no problems, those days are sure gone. We would also get an egg nogg before bed sometimes with a dash of brandy. I think this was to ensure a really good sleep so that we were able to conserve energy and also not keep everyone else awake with coughing etc...lol. I'm still pretty healthy and rarely become ill.

Yes, MsTickle, our ancestors really knew what to do in most cases. We balked at having to wear this little smelly pouch of stuff around our necks all winter to ward off colds, but it really didn't matter since all the other kids had to wear them as well. I went through elementary school without one day of absence due to illness.(:

old home remedies are very healthy.Nowadays if you have a headache, you can take a painkiller like aspirin and it goes away.If you were suffering from something more serious and needed an operation, you could go to hospital and have it done under anaesthetic. But if you'd been bord five hundreds years ago,you have any of the madicines we take for granted today, and you certainly go to have any sort of surgery as there were no anaesthetics so here you can use home remedies.

My great-grandmother was a nurse and thought all docs were a$$holes..LOL. She was so ahead of her time as she was involved with what would know be called alternative medicines..knew every single herb and its healing properties and was even something of a psychic healer to boot--she never took anything stronger than aspirin and lived to be 98. I think more and more people are returning to the "old" ways as the home remedies don't have the dire side effects that today's concoctions of pharmaceuticals have. Maybe you might remember this old time cure...I'm in my menopausal years so don't have to worry about female problems any longer...LOL--but an old time cure for menstrual cramps was....Cola syrup!!

I have never had absolute faith in the medical profession myself, pyewacket. I learned enough about home remedies that it stood me in good stead when I had a family of my own. I managed to raise them all to adulthood without losing one of them, LOL. Much of the crap the doctors tell you today is nonsense. I am constantly at odds with my doctor over some medication or other. I used to get terrible cramps every month and become very ill. My aunt would dose me with a little whiskey and sugar in hot water. I would sleep like a log and awaken free from pain.

My mom was big on blackberry brandy and whisky. those two liqueors were always in the house and a shot of either was used to cure stomach cramps, colds etc. Your're right...that would be child abuse these days but i'll tell you what...it worked and I never once dipped into those liquors just for fun....they tasted like medicine to me and still do.

I totally agree with you there. I have found my grandma and later on my mom materialising on home remedies. they used to work wonders and the feel good factor asociated with those was unsurpassable. however, today i only contemplate hose and hardly go for any home remedies except for toothpastes and some herbs for kitchen burns and boils. Thanks for a nice post.

I know what you are talking about and although I didn't really have any I do agree that some of them were great! Nowadays some doctors dish out medicines too easily and people's bodies start to become immune to them so that when they really need them they no longer have the same effect as they should! My favourite thing for a cold/blocked nose etc was menthol crystals, we used to dissolve them in very hot(but not boiling)water and put a towel over our heads to make sure we inhaled the menthol steam - it always worked wonders. Now that I think of it I realise I don't have any in the cupboard right now and I have to make sure I get some next time I am at the pharmacy! xxxx

yes,i too agree to this point...but also tht these days the pollution and all that is existing is not what earlier people had to face so things can get complicated quite soon...so all i got to say is one should know their body cycle and take both home as well as doctors remedies equally...
