i have a butterfly tattoo on my left ankle, had it for 5 years now. maybe im just lucky, i get to work in a company who doesnt mind whether their employees have tatts or not..
i watch news earlier today, they have the tattoo convention and some of the company doesnt accept applicants with tatt, having the impression that theyre ex convicts or something. a kind of tradition we filipinos got the spaniards before, it used to be a sign of vigilance and bravery, but now, some take it as an expression of one self and art..what now if these people have tattooes, its doesnt mean their bad people right?
one had an interview on that tattoo convention, he have a big tattoo on his arm and lower leg and he said that he applied a job on this certain company and when they found out that he have a tattoo somewhere, he is told that they dont accept applicants with tattoo...he even said, other people think he is a drug addict...are those people being judgemental???anyhow, whats your idea about companies not accepting people with tattoo??
i still dont know whats the reason behind though, but do you guys know what is it?
please share your thoughts..

I think people that judge others based on tattoos and piercings are morons.
That's one of the things I loved about working at the Family Dollar Distribution Center, they didn't say anything about piercings or tattoos at all. Hell, some of the managers had more tattoos than some of the employees.
Wal-Mart has also started to accept certain body modifications a lot more than what they did in the past. The first time I worked there, they complained about tattoos and any sort of piercings except for ears.
This time around - they didn't say nothing about my tats and the only person that ever said anything about my nose ring was the lady in personnel but a lot of other people wore theirs and nothing was said.
My nose ring ended up growing in because of the personnel lady and I'm eventually going to have it redone.

Well said. It's very narrow minded and foolish to believe that because my arms are covered in ink I must be a criminal or incapable of handling the simplest task. Put it this way, I could cover my tatts and get a job I am well qualified to do or have them showing and be denied the same job based solely on that....makes no sense at all

Besides the things that you have mentioned, some companies do not feel that large tattoos look very professional. They believe that it is a sign of risky behaviors. There is also the possibility that (if the tattoo was done by someone unsanitary) that you might have or develop hepatitis or other diseases associated with body fluids and needles. Note, all you people who love tattoos, I am not saying that these are facts, or that I believe them. Do not bash me. I am saying that that is part of the perception of the business world. Just as an answer to the question presented.

Hi there daryljane.... quite a shocking news you gave me. I was thinking of getting a nice tattoo myself. I may not now. But still how can people think like that. Its just like discrimination. Its like people who are black are low or something like that. Tattoos are just a way of self art or proving strength. How can people be so judgmental about such personal things. Now they would even say that we don't accept applicant wearing a certain kind of underpants.
Man thats a heck lot of stupidity. I fthey really want to know about the police records of the applicants, why don't they just approach the police. Its quite a stupid behavior.
Any ways only time can teach these fools.
Take Care
May GOD Bless YOU

I personally don't like tattoos. My son has several, my DIL has huge tattoos that her mother calls murals.
She is the sweetest girl you could meet, cute as a button, and very smart. She is an RN. And I must admit, that if I saw I nurse with that many tattoos, I would be concerned, I know her so her tattoos are something I can overlook.
If I were hiring her or working with her and did not know her, I think I would be concerned, especially given the amount. We are not talking a butterfly. One small one, I guess i can understand...I guess I am not that liberal.

I think a lot of these companies that are anti-tattoo and anti-piercings are concerned about their employees looking professional. I personally don't see anything wrong with tattoos or piercings and feel that if someone is brave enough to get them done then more power to them. However I do know people that think rather harshly of people with lots of visable large tattoos. The thing is while the company owner may not personally have a problem with tattoos he/she can't control what the public thinks. The company owner may not want to risk losing business because of employees having a lot of visible tattoos or piercings.

A lot of places of business won't. Depending on the type of compan it is, do the deal with the public? some companies like to project a certian image, some no tatoos, some no piercings, some want short hair, clean saven. Some comapanies here will let ou have one as long as it can be covered durring the work day. And then, some places just don't care. But either way it is their compan so the run it as the see fit i guess. Spme places are just reall stuck up too. ;)

i guess were just lucky to be working in this american company based in the Philippines...we have officemates coming in to work with cane, some have tattoos, some are even hunchbacks and still get to share their skills and help our members...its not a big deal in our company, as long as you have what they need for the business and that your record shows clean records, youre in for a better future!

i work for an organisation that makes its requirements quite clear and that is, no visable tattoos. Now, this is the best way i think. If it is made clear early enough in the process then the person has a choice if to apply for the job or not
blessed be

I want to start by aying that I have nothing against people with tattos - I have one myself in fact! I have a celtic love cross on my chest - you can only see it if I wear a low cut top that shows a bit of cleavage!
Before I had my tattoo done though I thought long and hard about where to have it done - I didn't want it somewhere where I couldn't cover it up on formal occasions or when I get older. Even at that time I understood that not everyone likes tattoos and can get the wrong idea about people who have them!
I understand too that tattoos are not the image that a lot of companies want to portray but if the tattoos are not highly visible when wearing normal working clothes then it shouldn't matter - I used to work with a guy who had a massive tattoo of a popular scottish band covering his back - now that was a work of art!
Your tattoo sounds really pretty and I don't think anyone should be judged because they have a tattoo! xxx

I think it should be against the law. If you can do the job good, why should it matter if you have a tattoo. I think this is ridiculous, I myself have two tattoos and it scares me to think me people think so backwards.

Hello daryljane,
I never heard anything like this. Just yesterday, I came across a friend's discussion which discussed about a plan for companies to cut the pay of the over weight staff due to higher insurance claim. This too, I never heard of. I don't think it is a good idea to have a guideline like this. Over weight or not, have tatto or not, is nothing related to your ability to do your work. It is your perfomance that matters...
