How did you learn how? Im tryin to teach myself but everything looks so confusing. and to make matters worse i taught myself to knit left handed so everything any instructions say to do i have to reverse them for it to work for myself. i was wondering what is the easiest way to learn without having to take a class. i went to those websites other people posted for the last post but its still too confusing for me! thank you to anyone who can help my figure this out.

I learned to knit from a book called I Taught myself to knit. It's avaiable at Wal Marts and Michaels Crafts. You get knitting needled, gauge, stitch holder, row counter and cable needle. As for socks, the only reason I took a class was to have help with turning the heel and the gusset. As for knitting left handed, there I can't help you. I'm doing up some socks for my husband and made them tube socks, with no heel. You just keep knitting from the heel to 1 1/2 inch then decrease for the toe. Getting a book called I can't believe I'm knitting socks. It's helped me a lot to get by those confusing instructions. Also I like to knit on circular needles best. I don't keep dropping my needle! Hope this helps

Hello lilmrsarata. Knitting can sure be frustrating! I, too, am a left-handed knitter. And I can't believe there isn't more help out there for us. YOu are braver than I as I still have never tried to reverse a pattern. I just stick with knitting items that have "even" sides, so there's no way they can be messed up by my lefthandedness.
Anyway, I just got me a set of double pointed bamboo needles to start with and practiced knitting round and round on them. Bamboo needles are important because they aren't as slippery as the metal ones. Then I found a really simple sock pattern (you know, they rate patterns, and I picked the simplest one I could find) and started knitting. The sock wasn't perfect but it did turn out. And I didn't even know how to reverse the pattern like you do.
The best way to learn to knit is to go to your local yarn or craft shops and see if they have a knitting group that comes in to knit. We have a small privately owned yarn shop that always has a small group of women sitting in there knitting. And they will answer any question you have. Well, I hope I've offered you something helpful. Keep knitting. It's nice to know there are other left-handers out there.

I started knitting socks with DPNs by following a few websites - you can try them if you like. I started off with toe up socks coz I felt that it would be easier and have been doing socks in this manner since then.
- http://www.misocrafty.squarespace.com/sockknittingresorces-/ (she has heaps of links on knitting with DPNs, magic loop, 2 circulars and so forth plus short row heels, etc)
- www.knittinghelp.com has excellent videos whereby you can view how to knit magic loop or DPN or 2 circulars and etc. :)
Hope this helps!

well i have never tried knitting a pair of socks before but they are on my list of all the things i would like to try to knit i would think the easiest way to knit a pair of socks is just to knit one long rectangle then stitch two of the opposite ends of the rectangles together to make a tube then stitch one end of the tubular rectangle closed and wah-la socks! when i start to try to knit a pair of sock i am probably going to try to do it that way and if it works-great and if not-ill have to find another way haha good luck

Have you thought about starting out with a pair of socks knitted on two needles?
Your local knitting store should have a copy of some basic two needle socks, and this would be a great way to make a start. And after some practice and a few pairs later, you could try adding some fancy stitches or different layered colours to help practice.
I only knit my socks on two needles as the 4 needle technique is too hard on my hands and quite confusing. They are quicker to make and once you've mastered the pattern and learnt to stitch them correctly you'llfind some people dont even notice they were made with 2 needles.
