Friends who hurt

I'm wanting other peoples opinions about something. Does anyone beleive that a friend with a good heart can be hurt so badly that they become a giver of pain themselves without realizing it even when its been pointed out by a friend? that a pain so bad can turn their heart dark and cold to the point where they don't care who they hurt just to help appease their own pain? Should this happen to you if your hurt by another lifetime friend of 20 years or more because of their own pain given to them by someone else hurts you badly is there forgiveness or mistrust forever?
