I don't have a health plan, i don't think i need any since i am still young and healthy, i beleive health plans are for the aged so that they can be well cared for. but for a young and dynamic young man like me, health plans are not important, the money that should have been used for health plan could be invested. that is my perception about health issues, do you agree with me? Your views if any.

Hello okwusman1 I don't agree with you. I think having a health insurance is important not only for aged but also for young and healthy people. We can never when we will be sick or encounter an accident, and when it happens health insurance helps and come-in handy. If one's concern is what will happen to the money you put in it when you did'nt get sick or hurt, there are health plans which you can get that acts as insurance which earns dividends and you can withdraw as a lumpsum when it reach maturity or you retire at a certain age. I also think its better to get one when your younger wherein your healthy and won't have a hard time paying for it rather that getting it when you are aged or old. I have a health plan and got it when I was even younger. Even if I am healthy when someone in my family gets sick I can use it for them. :-)

do you mean you can use the health insurance entered in your name for other members of your family? but what investing the money and if the person falls sick he can terminate the investment and use the money, is it not better?

I don't agree with you. Not having a health insurance can put in very bad situation financially. What if you get injured or get a disease which doesn't require one to be old like cancer, what are you going to do. No insurance company will give you insurance that time. I spend a lot of money on health insurnace but I know I will be taken care of if I get sick. Think about it again...

are you saying that it is better to have an health insurance policy? what of no sickness comes, what happens to the contribution made? look at it this way, is it not better to save this money on your own and invest it so that if sickness comes you can have direct access to the money and spend it? that is my perception about health insurance.

I had to have my gall bladder removed when i was in my early 20's and even with my health insurnace I had to pay my deductible which was $1000 and 20% of the rest and ended up having to pay about $5k or $6k out of pocket so i can't imagine what it would have been had i not had insurance. You just never know what can happen, even when you are healthy and by the time you are diagnosed it is too late because then you have a "pre-existing condition" and they won't accept you.

wooh, you mean you paid that much for the gall bladder that was removed, that is much!. i am sorry, gall bladder is it not responsible for urination? if yes how do you urinate now? i am sorry for such ailment. i think health insurance is a matter of choice because one can leave all his/her life without being sick of terminal diseases.

You are so wrong! Everyone needs health insurance. It doesnt matter if your healthy. What if something happen to you then what you do? What if you had some kind of an accident or got some kind of an illeness? You would have to get some kind of charity care. If thats what you want fine with me. Im so glad I have health insurance for me and my husband.

yah, it is good you and your husband have health insurance what of your children? does it mean that if someone has money saved in an account or invested when he is sick he cannot withdraw the money for medical bills? insurance requires your contribution which could also be saved and invested to cater for medical bills.

I'm very glad that I have health insurance, because even though I am young I have many health problems. Not only that, but my 15-month-old son is now having health problems as well, and I can't imagine what we would owe already because of them if we didn't have health insurance. I had known a lot of people, even young people, who were healthy and then suddenly starting having health problems. So I think really health insurance is a must for anyone.

i don't think is a must for everyone especially if you eat good food like fruits and vegetables to have health insurance. it is only the sick that needs a physician. if one has a health problems, the person can be cure withou a health plan or insurance then the money can be invested.

I was young and healthy and got pneumonia. A few years later, I was young and healthy and got into an accident. You can invest and only have a few thousand dollars. Meanwhile, your medical bills could be many times that. Take care and be careful.

sorry for the travails, does it mean if you were not having health insurance, the pneumonia and accident would have killed you? i know since then no such thing has happened again and you have been contributing, i prefer investment for the future.

No, it means that because of the pneumonia, I owed thousands of dollars. Thousands! But because I had insurance for the accident, I only owed a little money. It's obvious you want to do what you want to do and no one will talk you out of it. You have been told by many people what could happen. Do what you want, but if you end up ahead, you're very lucky. If you end up in debt, we told you so. Take care and good health to you.

it seems you work with insurance companies or a marketer of insurance policies. I know that sickness can strike anybody but if you have money made from other investment then, you can take care of your life without the assistant of any insurance firm.

You have to remember that many of your respondents live in the USA where state healthcare systems are very basic. A Health Insurance plan is essential there (though there are many unfortunates who either can't afford it or don't bother!) I don't know what the situation is in Austria but certainly in the UK we have a very good National Health Scheme and private Health Insurance is much less needed. Of course, we do pay National Insurance as a compulsory deduction from our salary (if working), so the net result is about the same - one pays for Health Insurance in relation to one's income. The difference (and benefits) with a National Health system is that, theoretically, everyone, regardless of what they have or have not contributed, receives the same treatment, which covers what are considered the essential health benefits - cosmetic surgery only in the case of severe burns or disfigurement, for example. Many who can afford it choose to take out additional insurance because it may mean a better quality of life when one becomes sick - private hospitals are more comfortable and have a better standard of personal care (though the health care and nursing are comparable to the NHS hospitals). One also may get quicker treatment, which is why many firms offer Health Insurance as a benefit - they wish their employees to be as little disturbed by ill health as possible. Whether one considers Health Insurance as necessary or not therefore depends very much on where one lives and how important it is to you to recover from an illness in as short a time as possible.

I do believe that it doesn't matter how young and healthy you are, a health plan may be very desirable. There are many occasions when even the youngest and healthiest person would find it useful - for example, in the case of an accident or a sporting injury which may make you unable to work for a period. A Health Plan will usually not only cover priority hospital treatment and more comprehensive rehabilitation treatment but may also compensate for loss of earnings. So one can consider it an investment with a return based on an eventuality that one hopes may never happen but would be very glad of if it did.

I have health insurance and it has come in useful. I am also not that old either. I have prescriptions where it helps with the cost there. I have my doctor's appointments where I just have to pay a co-pay. I would rather have it than not have it.

does it mean health insurance is a must for every family? what of if someone saves and invest for the future? i mean someone can save and spend when sickness strikes without having an insurance plan.

i cherished all your opinion about this issue but you people are not looking at it at my own angle saying health insurance is good but this amount you contribute could also be saved and used when sickness strikes. is it not the same money?

The more you need those health plans. The premium for young individual are lesser. And it is not for aged person only. Emergencies do happen and at least you are ready for whatever might happen to you. There are health insurance that offer lesser insurance premium and can be paid for say 5 years but that will be up to age 60 or 65 use. But our health insurance are on a yearly basis.

I believe everyone should have some kind of basic coverage. You should be going to the dentist twice a year for cleanings and exams. Reguar doctor check ups, eye exams etc. The problem is most people pass on the coverage because of the cost. The biggest reason I started my home business with the company I work for is beause of what they offer o those people who cannot afford it.

it is good if it is affordable, most health plans are very expensive and some do exceed their limited if provided by a corporate organization because of the cost.

I think health insurance is good to have. But you know, I am in the same boat as you kinda. I currently have health insurance. But open enrollment is up at work. I am seriously thinking of not continueing my coverage. I too am young and healthy. I have no perscriptions. I only go to the doctor 1 or 2 So really, why do I have it. It is just a waste of money. For me around $1500. I think this year I am going to not have it and have a flex spending account. Do you get that offered at work?

actually, health insurance is good to have but it is very expensive. atimes one will not fall sick through his or her life time but still contributing to it. though, most of the responses are of the opinion that health insurance is necessary.
