no no no, the narrator is telling US the story and it brings him back right to the spot where Tyler is asking if he has any last words, and he says "I still can't think of anything" and Tyler goes "Ah, Flashback humor!" It's BRILLIANT and I love it. The narrator never tells Marla the story, he only tells her that she met him at a very strange time in his life, which is undoubtedly true :D
