Someone has misinformed you, far from being stingy, here in the UK often it is hard to get away without a cup of tea. I drink about a gallon of tea a day. The first thing anyone does when you enter their house is to offer you a cup of tea (or coffee)

We in India drinking or offering tea is very much part of our culture. Coffee is not that common. I think tea is not that expensive so it's surprised to read that British are too stingy to offer even tea.
Urban, I don't think British are that stingy :-)

I think the poster is a Jehovah's Witness though and I am wondering if it is the experience of their colleagues when calling door to door that has led them to this conclusion?
