Is it too early to prune my pear tree?

I have a pear tree that is so old, it was on this property when my hubby moved here over 50 years ago. It is bad need of a good pruning to help it back to life. Is it too early to prune it back? Or should I wait until a frost? Any and all info will be greatly appreciate.
