How many minutes do you have to exercise daily to lose weight?

One of my biggest pet peeves of losing weight is that I never know exactly how much exercise I will need to do to lose weight. Sometimes it seems that I exercise until I can't do anymore and yet the scale does not budge. Perhaps I am doing the wrong type of exercise. Currently, I am working out on a stationary bike for twenty minutes three times a week and it is much harder than one might imagine. I've noticed a difference in the way my legs look during the weeks that I am most active, but not much difference in the scale. Perhaps I am not exercising enough to burn calories. Does anyone know how many minutes or hours daily one must exercise in order to actually start losing weight? Would appreciate some suggestions.

I am a lazy bone. I seldom exercise. Maybe the only exercise I do every day is when I ride my bike from where I live on campus to my office. When I have time, I stay in my apartment mylotting. When I work, I stay in the office preparing my lessons and go to classrooms to give lessons to my students. I need to exercise more to get more fit. Thanks for your nice discussion to mention me to have sports. Life is in motion.

on your bike, start at twenty mintues and then in a month go to thirty minutes and so forth. If you wanna gain weight the easiest way is to lift and bench. My weight lifting, your body becomes a fat burning machine. That means you will be hungrier more often and get more food into your system. Muscle is heavier than fat

Muscle burns fat? You mean raises metabolism? I had not considered that. I will try more of that too. Years ago, I did weight lifting and I noticed that I had all kinds of energy for additional exercise, because my muscles weren't so weak and my body was utilizing it's own fat stores as daily energy. Very good points!

They say the average minutes an adult should exercise every day is 30 minutes- That is just normal- I think to lose weight- you need to add a bit- Exercise is not enough on it’s own- You have to burn more calories than you take in to lose weight- So try smaller portion sizes and add some cardio to your exercise routine- Switch it up : ) Ride the bike 3 times a week- Buy a tae-bo tape and do this a couple days a week- Walk with your child on the other-

I don't know, but I am in the same boat as you are! I just want to lose 5-10 pounds, to get rid of my belly =) So I have been exercising for at least 30 minutes during the week, on an elliptical, but I haven't seen any real changes. I know it takes awhile to notice the results but I get impatient. I have noticed my lega are more toned but nothing else. I don't enjoy exersicing at all so I think changing things up would help, like walking one day, aerobics one day, and so on. So your body isn't just doing the same thing over and over again.

You've brought up an excellent point. I had forgotten about that. Thinking about it now, once I read that if you do the same exercise everyday it can over-stress the joints and muscles and lead to injury. Perhaps I will add circuit training to my routine.

At least the minimum of 30 minutes of exercise several times a week i was told. But then again it all depends on your size, your current weight, BMI etc. Sounds like what you're doing is a GREAT start. If you feel that it's getting a little easier for you with just doing 20 minutes, add an extra 5 on and maybe increase the resistance one step. As that gets easier, add another, then another and soon you will find yourself being able to exercise for longer periods of time. Vary your workout if you can, add some light weights after your bike ride to tone up your muscles. There are plenty of worksheets online that you can find to help you with the different type of hand weight movements to do. I am power walking (40) and running (30), also playing tennis several times a week and have dropped a dress size. Now that my son is at school i am able to exercise for an hour and a half or a bit more each day depending on how I feel. Some days I have a lot energy and some days i am a bit low. I still exercise though and try to do as much as my body will handle. Take it easy, don't rush it, and most of all ENJOY your workouts, its more fun that way.

If you are trying to lose weight, you should do an hour of cardio each day. If you can't do it right now, don't worry. Just do what you can and you'll eventually work up to it. Your workouts should be intense enough that you are breathing hard and sweating. Get your heart rate up. Lift weights three times a week if you can. Muscle burns more calories than fat. Riding a bike is good, it just takes a little longer to get your heart pumping than a treadmill or other equipment. The main thing is to maintain the highest intensity on a bike that you can for as long as you can since it's moderate activity. As you say you've noticed, bike riding is an excellent way to get your legs in shape. I'm a regualr at the gym, and although I've never worked with a trainer, two of my best friends are personal trainers so I get such advice for free. Ha, Ha. Don't give up. Good luck!

You will lose fat, and create muscle before you will lose weight. You have seen that already. I think, if you do not reduce calories, I have read that it takes 90 minutes daily, most days of the week to lose weight. When I was in school, they said for a woman to multiply your weight times 15, and that is how many calories a day you need to maintain your weight. To lose a pound a week you need to consume 3500 calories less than that amount or burn 3500 calories more. Example, not realistic 100 pound woman would need to take in 1500 calories daily, and not increase her exercise to maintain that weight. In a week that is 10,500 calories. If she wanted to lose a pound a week she would need to cut back to 1000 calories daily, or burn 500 calories daily on exercise. So it will depend on how many calories your exercise burns in what length of time as to how much you need to exercise. I was also taught that if you cut calories, then exercise, it is three times more effective than just cutting calories alone. Hope this is helpful info. I think I need to practice some of it myself.

I have fibromyalgia, a chronic pain & chronic fatigue illness. So exercising for me is difficult. But I started slowly and built up my time walking. If I hurt I would slow down until the pain eased and then pick up the pace again. I was walking one hour 3-4 days a week. I then increased that to 5 days a week. I also decreased sugar intake and increased water intake. It didn't happen overnight but I have lost 35 pounds. I still have 5-10 more to go and I think the only way I'm going to do it is doing some sort of stomach crunches, which I keep putting off. Again, starting slowly and building up over time. If you work up a sweat you are surely losing pounds. Good luck!
