The most common way to stop it is to drink water. But i have seen in some movies where they say, doing some unexpected things can also stop it. Like, suddenly showing a knife in a position to kill. I usually stop my breath for some time and it slowly reduces. Have you had any funny experiences due to unstoppable hiccuping?

Swallow 1 tsp. white table sugar, dry. A study found that this stopped hiccups immediately in 19 out of 20 people. Repeat up to 3 more times at 2-minute intervals if necessary.

I would like to try the scaring approach to stop my hiccups one day. lol.
But for now, I usually hold my breath and like you it slowly goes away. Hiccups are so not cool.

Laying on the ground. I don't know why, but if I get the hiccups so bad that they just won't go away no matter how much water I drink and how many times I hold my breath I just lay on the ground and they almost always go away. Even if I'm outside and have to lay on the city streets, I'll do it no matter how crazy people think I am!
usually though I take seven gulps of water and then hold my breath after swallowing the last gulp and that works.

hehehhe... showing a knife to kill ? are you serious? I never heard that before. I used to hear that make a surprised or scary thing to make it stop but I never try that either. I usually take a deep breath and hold it while I'm drinking a big glass of water. How long it go on now? if it goes on such a long time then you should go to see the doctor.
I never have funny experience about hiccups but I had experience about how to swim. have you ever hear about learning how to swim, you must eat sugar can? My cousin told me if I want to know how to swim then you have to eat sugar can but not the sweet part the end of sugar can (the one that locate next to the leave) I was so stupid, I gave up all the good part to him and I ate the tasteless part. Believe it or not, I never learn how to swim ... lolz.

I don't have any funny experiences with getting rid of hiccups, but I have a sure fire way to get rid of them. (though for some reason it doesn't work for some). I drink water upside down. This method has never failed me..
