Anybody got tips for avoiding money scams? There are a lot of websites I know... But my general rule so far is that if anything either... A: E-mails me without my consent/signing up and asks for personal information B: Has several typing errors C: Uses e-mails from unbusiness-like domains (e.g. gmail, hotmail) D: Asks me to send them money Then it is probably a scam. I usually don't even bother looking it up anymore... So many scams out there :( What are your guidelines for evaluation?

Your points on C and D is not agreeable to me. It is the E-mail address of millions of people, utilized for E-mail marketing as well as a major part of Internet business. So marketing programs or tools need to be mailed from many maketing persons using their unbusiness-domains. This does not form a strong criteria to be considered as a scam. Also in some programs running in the internet, some small joining amount is said to be sent in order to start up and run one's participation in the program. I don't say that it is totally scam free. But we shall have a very good speculation over the programs before we decide to join and work to get paid. Thank you for this nice discussion.

Thanks for your input. I see your point... but from what I've seen, professional services and websites have their own domain name that they use for e-mail. I don't see the reason for a professional to ever use an unbusiness-like domain name hotmail or gmail or yahoo for business purposes - it makes me doubt the credibility of the professional, or at least his competence. And when it comes to sending money... Well, maybe not all e-mails that ask you to send money for more money is a scam, but I would say the chances of such an e-mail NOT being a scam are like the chances of being hit by lightning in the same spot at the same time every day for a week.
