HELP! How Do I Explain Menstruation To My 11 Year-Old?

My daughter is 11 and I have a feeling it won't be long before she starts that dreadful thing call a "period" and I am not sure how to explain this to her. My daughter is sensitive about things and when she gets sick, like with a stomachache or headache, she won't tell anybody what's wrong with her, she just cries because she doesn't feel good. I have a 17 year-old also, but she started hers before I had a chance to explain things to her. I want my youngest to know beforehand so she doesn't freak out when it happens. Any advice on how to approach the subject?
