Catholic School or public?

I am so torn about this. I went to catholic school 1 through 12 grades and I loved my education and always thought my kids would do the same. Now I have two baby girls and am a sahm with no money to spare in the budget. Now I can go back to work when the girls will be school age but I live in one of the best school districts in the state and for this I pay a heck of a lot of taxes. The only reason I am able to afford to live here is because I inherited part of the house and bought out my sisters. Now when I have discissions with people they say I am foolish to not send my kids to public school here. They have an incredible curriculum and alot more to offer in education. Ugh this really tears me up maybe because I have never even given this a thought but the private schools are so expensive and that on top of taxes? Any thoughts on this if you made a similar choice, the pros and cons, I would greatly appreciate.

There was no question that my children would go to the Catholic elementary school. Before we got married my husband and I had to make a promise to the priest, the church, and God that we would raise our children as Catholics. I have been very happy with their education at the Catholic School. My oldest daughter has just entered high school. When it came to choosing a high school I left it up to her as to whether she wanted to go to a public school or the Catholic Secondary school (half an hour away in another town). She chose the Catholic high school and so far she just loves it. Most of her friends go there and she has no complaints about the uniform. Now when you get down to money, I cannot help you there. Currently, in Ontario, we check a box on our tax form as to which school system we support - Catholic or Public. The Catholic schools are not considered "private schools". Those are a whole other school system. We do not have to pay extra money to send our kids to a Catholic school. The government doles out money to the Catholic School Board and the Public School Board. There has been some conflict about that of late but I won't get into that. You have a tough decision ahead of you. I have no idea what the schools are like where you are. But I believe that the Catholic schools have more stringent rules and zero tolerance policy. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks so much for responding. I also think that the discipline and respect in Catholic school blows the public schools away around here. My husband (who is not Catholic) went to a Catholic grade school and public high school and he felt if he had stayed in Catholic School he would have been more disciplined to stay on track in his education. He said the freedom he recieved in High School just led to goofing off and skipping school. We were both determined to send our children to Catholic School but now with the cost of things we just don't know. That is awesome that Canada has that choice available and it is also awesome that your daughter chose Catholic High School. I know my mom was so proud when I chose a Caathoic University. Thank you again for your input:)

I also went to a Catholic elementary school and a public high school and to this day, 30 years later, I still regret it. All my friends went to the Catholic High School. I never made very many friends at the public high school. When it comes to high school, let your children make the choice but give them some guidance.

That also happened to my friend's daughter she went to catholic grade school and started in public high school because they had moved. Then since she was overweight she was picked on constantly and had no friends - actuallly it was really sad she went to a school dance and was teased so badly that she stayed in the bathroom and cried all night until the end of the dance. When her father saw how upset she was it was the final straw he transferred her to a catholic high school and before you knew she had a ton of friends and did very well.
