Since we both blog and spend time on the Internet and since the kids are home about the same hours we are, there was always a problem with everyone wanting to log computer time. We did buy another computer (we have three now) and we got a good deal as we bought it in a local shop where the guy puts together computers and sells ones that he takes in trade or buys used and then refurbishes. We got a great machine for less than it costs to supply kids with the latest video game equipment and a few games and at least it can be used for education and in doing homework, etc.

Hi there. I think if the child is responsible enough and taught to use the computer right, the ins and outs, I dont think theres a problem with it... Its a little like a child having a cell phone, huge responsiblities and safety issues have to be taught and learnt...

It really depends on the age of the "child." Some parents think their 15-year-olds who live at home are children. I don't think so at all. When I was 16 I got my own computer, and had it in my own section of the house. I was the only member of my family who knew how to use a computer, so I didn't have to share it. I don't believe in actual CHILDREN having their own computer, but teens are not children. If the young person is old enough, and responsible, let them have a computer.

I think that it would be ok. There is alot they can learn being on a computer. the internet brings access to so much information. but at the same time, i would safe guard it as much as possible. i would block my kids from chat rooms and stuff like that and i would monitor them when using it. it may seem extreme, but watch a couple episodes of dateline's "To catch a preditor" and you'll see why I feel that way.

The acually have a thing that lets you give them there own login user name. My four year old knows more about the computer than my husband! LOL. She can only log in under her name, and it only allows her on three sites on the internet that I have approved.
That was a concern of mine too, so I thought that was pretty cool!

Well, if you have already a good reason, then go for it!
And for those bad reasons, I believe you are responsible enough to watch them using the PC. Every bad things that is let alone always grow, so make sure your kids shall learn how to use it wisely ^_^

Haha,, I have a funny thought. After your bought that, I am sure your husband will be the one who will get problems from it. I think he will be addicted to computer games and he is just going to be afraid of it.. hahah.. And yeah,, he could also be worried about the money that will cost him ^_^

Thats what I was telling my husband, he's the one thats leaning more on the "no" side. As long as we monitor then closely. And kids in this generation are going to need to know how to use the computer, I mean even know most jobs require it! What better way for them to learn...right!

There is nothing wrong with letting your kids have their own computer. The important thing is to provide proper supervision, especially for younger children. There are also programs you can install on your computer to safeguard your children. These can be used along with supervision, but they should still be supervised.

It will depend upon the age of the child. If he/she is less than 16 years, I think he/she should not have a computer of his own, he can use his parents computer.

Hi rachsal4! Thanks for starting this discussion. I was wondering the same thing I have 6 year old daugther she loves playing on the computer. My Daugther hardly ever goes outside to play because we live in a bad neighborhood so my Daugther is always on my laptop. I was thinking about buying her a computer for Christmas because she loves playing on the computer and I need my computer. I will put alot of restictions on internet. Yes computer is a good idea

a computer for a family in general is good but not for childs personal use...so that you can monitor everything if their playing on it...i have 3 kids and we have one computer...i've set rules for my kids how to use computer.like using it for a few hrs. and doing their schoolworks and house works before playing computer..and never argued with each other...they have common interest...GAMES...only educational games not war and bloody games.

I think it might be a good idea as long as you keep track of what the children do on the computer. It can be a great educational tool.
