If you don't mind a little slow pacing, you should check out Fallout 2 for the PC.
Tracking a copy down shouldn't be too hard, and it can be found for dirt cheap.
It's a very deep RPG, and funny as hell to boot ;)

I have to agree with both of you. Bethesda will do a grand job I think, and you pertz should definitely try some fallout 2 first, if you plan on trying 3. Will probably allow you to appreciate it a little more. I know thats how it is for me. I am anticipating fallout3 as much as I am, Star Wars: The force unleashed.

Fallout 3 is finally out, and I've been playing it for the past few weeks or so. I have to say it is really different from the previous two in the series, and the whole storyline is really engaging! Great fun! Well worth the wait for this sequel to an awesome series.

Played both Fallouts dozens of times. My favorite RPG of all time. That being said, the more I find out about Fallout 3 the less I like it. There are so many things that are changed/added/removed in F3 that shouldn't be changed/added/removed. It's just becoming a great RPG but a bad Fallout. I'm sure it will be a good game but not as good as the originals. Everyone absolutely has to play Fallout 1 and 2. ESPECIALLY the first one , 2 is a bit too silly, although equally great.

If anyone wants some other great RPGs by people who made the original Fallouts, definitely check out Planescape: Torment and Arcanum.

I never played the first two but I got the third one and greatly enjoyed I have already beat the main quest line and have been working on the side quests now. I like it much more than Oblivion and will probably be playing it for a while working on getting the bobbleheads and such. I would recommend it for anybody and you could probably end up putting 40+ hours into it.

Hey
I know I'm a little late on this one but i gotta say this game is awesome!!
Ive been playing it for a few months now and played through as a good person so all good karma options along the way and the same with bad karma too
Ive played the add-ons Operation Anchorage and The Pitt and there brilliant! There well worth downloading cause they give you loads of new things e.g weapons, armors and other secrets;)
Soon i will download the 3rd add-on as it looks amazing!

dding mod now a days is a bit complicated. But Editing items thru geck is really great. Since I have finished the game without any editing. And I dislike the ending, I started the game again and set it to very hard settings. I edited my Power Armor to have a defense rate of 200 and my helmet to 150. Then I made my Sniper Rifle have a hit rate of 200 and a critical rate of 10% and critical hit to 250.
And I love to kick some super mutant arses and those stupid mercenaries that try to kill me. Ahahaha. I love it when I have full AP points and have 3 Super Mutant enemy and use VAT mode and kill them in Slow Motion hehehe.
Anyone here knows hows to patch a pirated version to pitt and anchorage and still play?

I've not played the first two as I'm not a pc gamer. I got it mainly because it was bethesda that did as oblivion is one of my favourites and I have not been disappointed it plays very much like oblivion but if it ain't broke don't fix it, I say.
