When I was a child, everyone around me almost was racist. I grew up in small-town Kentucky, and the amount of hate and racial tension there was just insane.
Most of it was perpetuated by older people rather than younger people, but sometimes even the younger people were involved. I never really cared anything about race, and I can't count the number of times someone has called me a "race traitor" for having too many friends of other races, or dating someone of another race.
I don't live there anymore, but the last time I went to Kentucky to visit, I spent a few hours at my aunt's house. There were several relatives there, and they were discussing the marriage of two of my classmates. I wasn't very close to the girl that they were talking about, but I had been very close to the guy, and so I was interested in the conversation. However, instead of saying his name, they kept saying things like "I can't believe she married that black guy" or even "that n*****". I kept saying "I know his name, his name is Mark, don't call him that" and my relatives refused to say his name, and kept talking about how horrible it was this white girl married him. *sighs*
I've never understood racism, even though I spent so much of my early life around it. I simply don't care about what race people are!

Unfortunately i have seen many acts of racism, most of them towards my 9 year old brother who is mixed raced. He is forever being called names by children his age and also older teenagers and it drives me crazy! I hate that there are small minded people out there who are bringing their children up to act like this.
I wish the tv was just exaggerating the issue of racism but it really isn't!

this is sad as i would think this stems from parents. why else would you look upon a coloured person as a person to insult when you are 9? my parents never mentioned colour and i thought noting of it as all hollywood movies had a black charactor to look up to.
it was not until i started watching brit movies with grit i saw a different side.
what a sad place we live in!

Unfortunately, I don't have to go far from the responses on this page to give an affirmative reply that racism is still very much alive in modern society. As I understand the Guidelines of this site, I shall not name names.
